I laugh at some people's ignorance about the Fed AWB---with these people referring back to it saying, "We must do this again!" As you point out, it wasn't a "ban" on AWs at all. It only slightly changed what these rifles looked like.

My friend bought a new Bushmaster in 1999, in Arizona, right in the middle of the AWB period. Had an A2 stock, PG, and a 14.5" barrel with a pinned-welded AK muzzle brake.

It also did not prohibit private party transfer or ownership.

Most important: the Federal ban allowed at least one evil feature, while the California ban allows none. With one evil feature being the pistol grip, it was easy to configure a normal AR so that it didn't have any other evil features (flash suppressor, collapsing stock, bayonet lug, etc). Millions were sold.

It wasn't much of a ban at all.
