    California Police Chiefs Association

The California State Sheriffs' Association and the Association of Deputy District Attorneys have both delivered official statements to Gavin Newsom's campaign office announcing their opposition to the Safety for All Act.

It would be interesting to see where the California Police Chiefs Association stands on this initiative.

The Legislative Affairs Manager for the CPCA is Lauren Micheals.

A few respectful and professional e-mails, from concerned citizens opposed to this initiative, may encourage a statement. lmichaels@californiapolicechiefs.org

Don't forget to contact your local police chief to express your concern as well.

Here is the letter I wrote to my local Chief of police. I tried to keep it to points that affect me the most. Feel free to use and modify as needed.

I am writing to you today as a concerned citizen of Martinez, a responsible firearm owner, hunter, and sport shooter.

I would like to convey to you my concerns about the Safety For All Act that will very likely be appearing on the November 2016 ballot in California.

As you may or may not know, the California State Sheriffs' Association as well as the Association of Deputy District Attorneys have both issued official statements opposing this initiative.

As a firearm owner I have undergone over 5 background checks, 50+ days of waiting/holding period, passed the California Firearm Safety Certificate test, and demonstrated safe handling procedures on numerous occasions. I also hold a valid hunting license in California.

If the Safety For All Act is passed by the voters in 2016, myself and thousands of other law abiding residents of Martinez will be required to obtain an ammunition purchase authorization, subject to the unknown restrictions, requirements and fees of the California Department of Justice, in order to legally purchase ammunition in the State of California.

The Safety For All Act will make it a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 1 year in county jail, for me to share ammunition with my hunting and range partners.

If I purchase ammunition at the Martinez Gun Club, a facility I frequently patronize, and leave the premises with rounds that have not been discharged, I could be charged with a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 1 year in county jail.

My ammunition purchase authorization would also likely be revoked by the DOJ if I was convicted of any of the above actions that are, as of today, perfectly legal in California.

I also strongly believe the Safety For All Act, if passed, will immediately introduce a large "black market" of ammunition within the state. Thousands of law abiding citizens will be unknowingly participating in this market. This will lead to additional and completely unnecessary drains of police department resources with no additional contributions to public safety.

I am quite sure you and your department are busy enough dealing with actual criminal activity and I urge to to join me in opposing this ballot measure.

I would greatly appreciate if you would voice my concerns about the Safety For All Act of 2016 to the professional law enforcement groups and associations you belong to.
