    trunk guns

in what way is the legal way of having a handgun in the car, can it be hidden in the trunk? and a loaded mag hidden inside the car?
i have my handgun in the trunk hidden in the quarter panel with a lock and in a gun bag, or should i just leave it in a plain box in the trunk..

Why not just throw a rifle back there? Kinda gets around a lot of the handgun laws.

Get an SKS or something and some stripper clips and leave it back there.

You can transport a handgun in your car 3 ways legally:

1 - unloaded and exposed, including in a hip holster, provided you don't go into any "school zones"

2 - unloaded in the trunk

3 - unloaded in a locked box anywhere in the car

In all three cases you can have ammo close at hand, just don't conceal any loaded magazines if using method 1.

Yes or you could just have a few mags right next to the gun in the trunk. Or you could have a backpack with a lock on the front seat with the gun/mag right next to each other to give you a "tatical" advanage.

Would a keyed padlock with the key in it still be considered "locked"?

I go with one of those 3 dial combo locks and have all but one set to the combo

If its for a handgun most things with a lock will work. Even a lunch box with a lock will work or you could open carry it(concealing is illegal) unloaded(assuming not near a k-12 zone). If it is a long gun you could conceal one or open carry one with out a locked container(also assuming you are not knowly near a k-12 school). Mostly the locked container is more to deal with the school gun free zones or to avoid attention.

How about a disassembled .22 rifle such as an AR-7 or a Feather? I'd always wanted to carry one in the storage area behind the back seat of my pickup truck. Does a soft sided case with locking ability suffice? I would keep a couple of loaded mags in a different area of the truck's cab. Sorry if I'm straying a little off topic, and yes, I did do a search nothing found was specific enough.

Man you're getting it all wrong. No lockup required for rifles / shotguns (unless they are 'assault weapons' as defined by regs). And the loaded magazines do not have to be kept at a distance. They can legally go right in the same container with the firearm, if you want.
As to the softsided case issue, I posted a topic a couple weeks ago about usinga locked seabag, mostly fishing for legal citations. Consensus was softsided containers such as zippered gun rugs were fine, as long as they could be locked securely. (the seabag could not, with a little work you could worm your hand / forearm inside it despite the locked flaps)
