    Contra Costa Ammunition Law

So, this thread here reminded me of the only time I purchased ammo at Sports Authority in Concord. They made me fill out a log book with my address, DL number, type of ammo, etc. Since I thought it silly, and no other gun store required it, I filled it out incorrectly. Figured it was some retail FUD.

However, I found this tonight on google:

MunicodeNEXT, the industry's leading search application with over 3,300 codes and growing!
of not less than two years

Sports Authority is on airport property, which is county owned. If you buy ammo there you have to sign the book and show ID. I found a real good deal some time back a bought a bunch. Real time warp on the price. You probably have Mark DeSanlier to thank for this an this guy in now in the State Senate. A real piece of work he is.
The current airport director is a real piece of work too, and proably force it down Sports Authority throut.

Yep. That Sports Authority is the only place I have ever seen that enforced as well. If anyone is interested in the Board of Supervisors original documents on that resolution I can dig them up.

I'd never heard of this law. At any place in the county that I've bought ammo, I've only ever had to show ID to show I'm over 21 if it's for a handgun.

So being county owned airport property...does that generally mean any unincorporated parts of the county where this ordinance is in force? Because obviously at the various gun shops around the county (wc collectables, canyon sports, antioch armory, big 5 anywhere, etc) you don't need any documentation or fleecing.

So, if they do start enforcing this... what happens to all the other gun stores? It seems like they could revoke all of their business licenses...

Very few places that sell ammo in CCC are in unincorporated county land; everyplace under city control is exempt.

I believe that law has been in place since 1995.

The last time I went there they told me it was due to being next to an airport. I did not care as I was getting a good deal on some 30-30

The way I read it I don't see it as only being unincorporated areas. Sounds to me like "everywhere in the county."

Look at the ordinances above the ammo registration:
                        82-36.804 Local firearms dealer licenses.
In accordance with the provisions of Penal Code Section 12071, the director, as the local licensing authority, shall accept applications for and may grant licenses valid for one year (Penal Code Section 12071(a)(6)) permitting the retail sale of firearms and ammunition in the unincorporated area of the county where otherwise allowed by the involved zoning district,
                        That's all they can regulate.

Wouldn't ammunition also fall under State preemption? When I hear about specific cities, such as SF and LA, passing laws against shipped ammunition it always bugs me....even though I don't live in either city.
