For YT I'd go 20-40 rated rod. 15-30 is light for big YT.

Sweet. Got myself a seeker 20-40! What lb test is the best topshot for the torium. I also have a daiwa sl30sh that I have on the same rod. Should I run 20 lb test on the daiwa and 30 lb mono on the shimano?

Depends on the fish your fishing for........I like to have a 20-25 setup and 30 for most of the YT & tuna.......I pulled in plenty of BFT to 50lbs on 25

I run 50lb spectra and short 20' topshots off floro that get frequently cut off and changed to match the type of fishing and the bite of the day. I like 25lb for a good all around line. Takes effort to actually break one off but you can horse them pretty good and it still gets bit. Now for dedicated YT setup I fish 40lb when it's wide open and just crank down the drag. Really depends if you are fishing blue water or nearshore.

I'm a believer of heavier lines for fishing. Lots of guys swear the lighter stuff gets bit better and to a point it does. However, the guys fishing the lighter stuff are usually the more experienced guys with better presentation. Bait presentation is far more important. Ask any commercial guy about 15-20lb and they will laugh at you. They use 300lb plus and get bit all day. I will insist though on fluorocarbon leaders. I never knew how bad mono glowed underwater still I started diving. It looks like frigging track lighting.

I've gone on many charters and I have never gotten into it with a tuna.

Hey mikethedeckhand. Yeah I wanna run 40 lb test my shimano but I didn't know if that was too much! I'll put 25 lb test on my smaller reel. And flouro carbon? Sounds good. Yeah I usually run braid then a topshot. White or green spectra?

I run green but I'm up north. I think a lot of the guys down south run white. Whites also good since it stains when it chafes making it easier to spot line damage. When I fish YT off the bottom in mex we use straight 50lb and get bit WFO and still break some off. For little rat YT on paddies we go way lighter. That's why it's good to run shorter topshots. You just cut and toss when ever you need to. It's good to change your line often any how.

Oh, FYI running short topshots can make casting light live bait difficult if you are not used to it. It can cause quite the backlash if your knot gets jammed up in the guides. I rarely use bait though and almost always fish iron or swimbaits.

there's definately a learning curve to casting braid but you greatly cut down the weight the bait is dragging around out there, line dia. is cut by 2 3rds so less drag in the water and it isn't bouyant any longer so the bait isn't having to "pull it under".
i keep cutting my short shot down till it's 3 or 4 feet long before retying.

if you even realize your knot is passing through the guides it's because you haven't yet taken up the john collins/rp knot.
the bs with complicated chunky, hard to tie knots, crazy glue, bimini twists etc. is a thing of the past.

Right here. Basically the gears and drags of a Trinidad combined with different parts. And thats ok because the Trinidad's helical gearing was what made it shine. Just add the above drags and some of Cal's grease and youve got a solid 30lb reel.
