I've killed lots of pigs on both private and public land. Big ones, little ones, boars and sows. They all tasted good - never had a bad one.

The one thing in common they all had was area....... all were taken in Central CA, King City area and Ft Hunter Liggett.

Every time I hear of someone getting a "stinky" one, it seems to have come from up north. Maybe it's because there is a lot of barley down there, planted by the private ranchers to retain pigs for the guides, I don't know.

Anecdotal opinion, and not worth what you paid for it.

I have eaten a log wild hog and I really cant tell a difference as long as they were smaller pigs that were eating wild, not trash. The only strong (nasty) eating hogs I have encountered were either large boars or in one case a older sow that looked like she had lost a litter or was just passed her prime.

I used to have a guy on the Carrizo plains that grew barley i would hunt there frequently but this drought has been brutal on him. That was the best eating pigs ive ever had though. Good luck with your search.

I hog hunt central and south texas and haven't noticed difference. Smaller young ones tend to be better eatin. All the hogs I've shot were complete feral hogs. Just take care of the meat after the kill and should be good to go

Killed a few in the King City/Coalinga area and they were excellent (especially the ones raiding the sugar beet fields). Eaten a couple others fom Gilroy area and they were great. Killed a few in Mendocino in the summer and they were tough as nails...even the couple little ones.

From my limited experience, Save the meat pig shooting until after the rains and foraging becomes easier for them. They taste better and are more tender when they're eating like pigs.

We've never come across a bad tasting hog here in Fla. We've taken them up to 262 pounds. We have a plant called yellow root and if the hogs have been eating the plant, their fat turns yellowish and they stink when we open them up, but we do a good job of trimming the fat, then rinse the meat before icing and have yet to have any taste differences.
You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You might not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you're going to do are, 1) Call someone with a gun, 2) Pray they get there in time.

Best tasting hogs? Hands down BHVR, they are straight off the farm.

My guide Jack at hogcanyonhunts has pretty good eating pigs on account of the barley and acorns. Was there this past weekend for my second hunt with them and got about a 200 lb boar. We've pulled 6 pigs in two overall hunts for a solid price. Ideally you'd whack a pig in some fruit orchard but overall, barley is more realistic.
