    Upland Bird Dog Training

I'm interested in getting some training for my 6 year old yellow lab. When I lived on 6 acres, she was pretty good at pointing, and flushing pheasant, but since I've moved she's become very unpredictable. I'm curious about getting her some training, and wondering who does bird dog training in the Sacramento area?

I sent my pointer to a guy in Chico, CA, so not terribly far from you. I really liked his style and my dog came back a pointing (and obedient) machine while in the field; he's also a family pet and he's still great at that, too. I can send you more information if you'd like to message me.

My dogs have been going to Steve for years. The fellow from Chico is named Pierre Eurrida. I don't have any contact info on Pierre. Steve and Pierre are the best in NorCal in my opinion.

How much do they charge to train? And can a 5 year old dog learn?

One of my yellow labs has hunting in his blood, he just hasn't been trained to have the patience.

This was my concern, but my fiance' works with dogs and cats for a living and has house broke my lab. The first 4-5 years of her life she was outdoor only, on a ranch, free-roaming to chase cottontails, kill kingsnakes, even leave a half-alive squirrel on our back porch. Now she lets us know when she wants out for potty, doesn't chew, and is obedient in the house. I think old dogs CAN learn new tricks. Thanks a bunch for the references, I have some calls to make now. I'm excited for this!

Call Steve and tell him that you have a 5 years old lab that you want him to evaluate. First, he will ask "you" what your needs and expectations of the dog? After the evaluation he will tell you if your expectations are too high or likely, too low. Steve has told me many times that most hunters only get about 20% out of their dogs hunting abilities because the owners expectations are too low.

Steve will evaluate your dog and give you an idea of what needs to be done and what it will take to get the dog where you want him/her to be. That's one thing I really like about Steve Klassen. There is no sales pitch or telling you your dog will need months and months of training. Steve is about as honest as they get and he gets amazing results. Having said that, remember its also about the dog owners expectations and the limits of the dog. Some owners simply want a dog to point or flush, but don't care if they retrieve to hand or in some cases, retrieve at all. Steve is working with two of my youngest Brittany's (Posey and Mira). Posey is 22 months old and got her Junior Hunt title right away. After two attempts by Steve to get Posey her Senior title, he told my wife and I that he recommends we skip the Senior Hunt Tests and take her directly to Masters. Now, another trainer may have systematically had us go through the Senior Hunt test and then Masters, thus costing us lots of money and time; however, Steve said that he thought it would be a waste of money and time to go that route and that the dog can complete her Masters without going through Seniors and that in the end, we would save money and time. Now, I don't know about you, but I sure like that kind of attitude and approach.

My other Brittany is Mira, who is only 9 months old. Last Friday Steve had her point three chukars with solid points and twice Mira made 80 yard retrieves to hand. Three months ago Mira was scared to death of live Chukars and several times she did retrieve she took off with them because she thought Steve was taking it away from her. Steve fixed that quickly. Mira has only had about ten30 minute trainings with Steve. Steve believes in short focused trainings, but will also give you lots of pointers that you need to use at home with your dog. Make sure you follow through, as it will get your dog quicker to being finished and will save you money.............Call Steve. Tell him Mira and Posey's owner recommended him.

I don't know what other trainers charge, but Steve typically plants 2-3 Chukers (depending what he wants to do that day) for I believe about $80. He also will bring your dog back out to work on "honoring" with another dog and there is no additional charge.

With labs it may be less expensive if he's using bumpers for some training. I know the birds cost him about $15-$18 each (depending upon the season), so close to 40-50% of the cost are the birds. He's got a number of electronic bird/bumper releases I see him using for labs. He's got a nice property ideally set up for dog training and its right off of hwy 80 in Dixon, Ca.
