I never knew about the test until a year or so ago when I talked with a ranger on the Big T. He pulled out a small bag of cotton balls. Really surprised me, he said they all carry them now.

I am taking my Step Dad to Eastern Sierras to do some flyfishing. Prefer stream fishing and we have waders and gear and such.

We will be "car" camping. Looking for a place we can camp and then hike out to stream fish and actually catch some worthwhile Trout. I prefer to be a little higher in altitude since the heat down low is pretty hot.

Can anyone give some recommendations? We will be going in August...

I also prefer to be in spots that are a little off the beaten path to avoid other people as much as possible.

Or we could also camp and drive to another spot but I would really like to leave the car behind and walk/ hike in.

Thanks in advance. I will be doing research at the same time so hopefully you guys and send me in the right directions.

Getting ready. Noticed 90+degree weather in bishop. Is upper Owens river this hot as well? What is the altitude just above Crowley lake. What about below Crowley. Should I expect hot weather as well?

Crowley Lake sits at about 6950'. The temps at Crowley usually are smack in the middle between whatever Mammoth and Bishop are reporting. In other words if Mammoth is 68 and Bishop is 88 then Crowley will be about 78. And 20 degrees between Mammoth and Bishop is usually right on as far as the highs are concerned. For up to date weather info check out the dweebs report (google Howard Sheckter).

Back in the day when the lake was full you could kick up the mouth of the owens where it flows into Crowley. We would drive around Benton crossing to any of the dirt roads on the east side that went down to the lake. You really didn't need a tube, you could wade the shore line looking for the big trout herding\chasing the perch fry up to the shore. It seems all those roads are closed now. The last time I went to Leighton Springs I had to walk 1/4 mile to lake and then out towards alligator point to launch our tubes because it was so muddy.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

That's a good idea, small piece of yarn should work too, I usually have some of that fishing.
