    Grunion Run

Tonight is the second of a four night Grunion run beginning at 10:30-12:30.
    1) Can you catch grunion and keep live in a bucket as bait?
    2) Is Grunion good live bait? I hear halibut like it.

    Thanks

    1. yes...but unless they've changed the laws, only without aid.....can only use your hands.

    2. any of the silverside family is good for live bait.

I'll caution this however, DFG has a wide latitude in 'want and waste' laws...particularly with things that fall into the "no limit" category of this state.

    Good luck.

Would a couple dozen 24 be considered "want and waste"? IF, I see them I wouldn't take much more.

As a kid I remember seeing people with buckets full of them and watching hundreds being prepared in a egg/milk, crushed Ritz cracker breading and deep fried. The were wonderful, Today I'd rather see if I can catch a halibut or other fish off of Malibu or Paradise Cove Pier.

Once you have taken/possessed the species legally, the harvest is over. It would be like prosecuting you for throwing away a piece of deer meat at the bottom of the freezer that got freezer burned. As long as the grunion are legal for bait the OP should be fine. People harvest all kinds of fish for bait.

          Smelt being a prime example.

Fish on! However if DFG asks tell them you eat them. They ask less questions that way.

I have also seen a DFG warden get all spun up about transporting live bait fish from where they were caught
The best part of hunting and fishing was the thinking about going and the talking about it after you got back
