looking for a hunting mentor for my son and I.

exactly as the title states, my son and i are taking hunters ed next month (beginning of July) and would like to get out and hunt some hogs before the years end. I will be using a compound bow and we are not sure if he will be using a rifle or bow yet.
I hunted with my father when i was young and now that I am 40 and dealing with muscular dystrophy I really need to Instill something in my son that he can teach his kids that will be useful for him and his kids later on in his life.
I regularly shoot USPSA matches and teach an intro class at USI and my son has been shooting with me since he was 6 (he is 12 now and will be 13 in October). he out shoots me with an AR10 and is very safety conscious.
we have access to over 500 private acres in Georgia (owned by family members) that we are planning to visit next year but I am trying to get us up to speed before then.

just looking for some one to take us out glassing or even just let us come along on a hunt without us hunting so we can get some basics down.
we are located in the concord area and are willing to travel.

if anyone is interested or has some good resources for us i would greatly appreciate it.
thanksfor any help or comments in advance

Too late this year for pig or deer, but next year look on this page for the advanced hunter education clinics, pig, deer, turkey, etc...
      They are great for kids

if you're interested in a guided type hunt for your first time, i recommend Ed Roth, in Lockwood, near Paso Robles for hogs. We've been a couple times and love it, he'll get you on the hogs safely. They''l clean it for you, or take the time and teach you how to clean it. They'll skin it for you, or let you do it yourself. The first time hog hunters in our group do their first one on their own.

plus you can stay at the Hearst Hunting Hacienda on the Fort Hunter Ligget Base.

and getting maps is the first step for public land hunts, if you're going that route.

            good luck

Why is is too late for pigs? Last I heard you could hunt them year-round.

OP - if you want to hunt pigs on public land, Fort Hunter Liggett is the best game in town. You probably won't "get lucky" there, but it does happen often enough to keep me going back.

I'd be willing to show you around down there, but you and your son need to go to their web page first and jump though the hoops - weapons registration, annual pass, etc.

The hot weather makes it too late. Pig is best in the cold months. Now they are in the creek bottoms cooling off in brush that would strangle a snake, and the meat is not much good either.

Huh - guess I better stop killing pigs in the summer time, then. That last one I killed in 102 degree heat tasted just fine.

While I'll agree with you that hog hunting is better during cold months, the rest of the "conventional wisdom" just isn't true, in my experience.

I'm glad people believe like you do, though - makes it easier for me to move around and find 'em when there are less people in the field.

Depends where you are hunting. Ive killed 90% of my pigs in the summer I just drive from water source to water source in the early morning late evening. On a good ranch there will be pigs at every spring and pond you got to. In the winter there is so much feed and water they scatter and I have a hard time killing them then. If you are hiking around on BLM though winter is good because it is cool enough to hike all day and maybe jump or bump into one.
