    New Zealand mixed bag hunt

I was working in New Zealand last week and got a chance to go out yesterday for some shooting with friends.

We started out duck hunting but the weather was too nice and the birds weren't flying. I did manage to get a couple of Paradise Ducks though.

We quit that and got the rifles out to see if we could find some deer, pigs or goats and one of the farmer's wives asked us to shoot her some hen turkeys if we saw some.

We spotted a pretty big flock out in one of the fields and I got out the suppressed Tikka in 222 to shoot them. I emptied two magazines in about a minute, shooting 7 hens from 130 - 200 meters before the flock scattered and got away.

I also shot 4 goats including one big billie with a 3' horn spread but he fell off of a cliff and none of us wanted to climb down into the jungle to get a picture.

I also saw 7 fallow deer but they were all does and young bucks so I passed on those.

Here's a better picture of the suppressed Tikka. The barrel was cut to about 20 inches and the suppressor has threads about half way up the body so it only adds about 5 or 6 inches to the length of the rifle. It worked great , no recoil and less noise than a 22 short. I wish I could have one here for my varmint guns.

Here's another picture of the country we were hunting:

The pigs, deer, goats, etc. all live in the jungles and come out to graze in the pastures.

New Zealand is on my list. Wish my work would take me there.

Very cool Frank. How similar are those turkeys to ours here in Ca?

They're actually Eastern sub species of American turkeys imported into New Zealand in the 1800's. They're not hunted regularly and there are no predators in New Zealand so they are stupid easy to hunt as you can see from the photos.

I snuck up within about 20 feet of a flock of 8 jakes and just about gave them heart attacks when I popped out of the brush. Even then, they only ran about 50 feet before going back to feeding.
