    Shotgun shot size question?

    Hi all:
    Looking to hunt with a shotgun in San Bernardino county. One section of it has this rule "A zone has been established where shotgun use only (with shot no larger than half the bore diameter) is allowed. "

    I'm not sure how to decipher this regulation. Is there an existing chart or webpage that would help? For example, if I was using a 12ga, what would be largest shot size I could use?
    What would be largest for a 20 ga ?

    One more thing: why exactly do they have this strange rule on shot size?
    Thanks, --RKJ

    Boils down to, In the OHV areas they do not want you using slugs.

    12ga = .729 / 2 = .3645 ( 000 Buck is .360 )
    20ga = .615 / 2 = .3075 ( 1 Buck is .300 )

    Ammo Information Shot Size Table* LEAD SHOT Shot number diameter (inches) diameter (mm) approx no. of pellets in 1 oz. 000 BUCK .36 9.14 6.2 00 BUCK .33 8.38 8 0 BUCK .32 8.13 9 1 BUCK .30 7.62 11 2 BUCK .27 6.86 15 3 BUCK .25 6.35 19 4 BUCK .24 6.10 21 BB .18 4.57...

    What are you hunting for? Coyotes and Jacks are all that's open out there. #4 Buck for yotes and #5 or #6 Bird Shot for Jacks.

      Regular birdshot is fine. No slugs. Heavily used area. Smaller shot loses energy fairly fast.

        Hunting near Barstow

        I understand that jackrabbits and coyotes are open out there.
        Aren't ground squirrels also fair game?
        I'll be there first week of May.
        Thanks, RJ

            Green light on the ground squirrels. Kill 'em all.
