Duck hunting

Never have done it. Always wanted to. Where is the best place to get information on this? I don't have any friends or family that are into it.

DirtBiker, I'm new to duck hunting also, and can't wait to go out this fall. I'm going to a waterfowl hunting clinic held by the CA DFG to get primed on duck hunting.

guys are taking up the sport. DFG is an excellent source as well as the outdoor shows and your local hunting store. I learned to call by buying DVDs at Wal mart along with some cheap calls from there and I would also go to the park and listen to ducks (mallards) You'll need a whistle;mallard call;waiders;alarm clock;steel shot;lanyard;shotgun choke;camo;good eyes;patience; and some flexibility to make it out in the worst weather. BTW, there are lots of refuges in and around Sacramento.

I think it would be a great idea to get together for a duck hunt. When does the season start down here, late October?

Duck season is a little differnet each year as is the bag limits.

Usually it starts the 3rd or 4th weekend in October, and runs all the way till about the last weekend in January. Fish and game announces the season right around Sept 1st (opening of Dove season) I think. Bag limits depend on the counts they make pre-season..

I hunt in the Northern Sac Valley but I go with my father on his duck club. Unfortunately I'm a guest so I can't take anyone. There are several wildlife refuges in the Nothern Sac Valley that offer hunts.. Sacramento, Delevan, Sutter, and Colusa are the Federal refuges, and Gray Lodge is a state run wildlife area. You can pick up a couple extra weeks if you want to head north to Tule Lake, Lower Klamath, or Modoc and you'll have a chance to get dark geese. For me it's about a 6-7 hour drive to Modoc up near Alturas.

Rumor has it that this season is going to be 100 days long, 7 mallards (only 1 hen), 1 sprig, 0 canvasbacks , 2 scaup, and 8 geese (6 may be Canadian, 6 specs, 4 Aleutians (sp?), or 8 Snows), and the season starting the 14th of Oct. And hopefully they finally ban robo ducks.

I dunno, robo ducks are a gimmick. Sometime they help, sometimes they don't. It really depends on the day. They tend to keep the geese away I've found. I don't know what its like on the refuges anymore. Out of control? I've still found that anyone who can call and set up his spread right tends to do better.

Wow, 8 snows! That's a lot of geese. I may need to get a new strap to carry them all! I guess they have gotten all out of control up north then? We (dad and I) were lucky one day last year and limited on snows(8) and nearly limited on darks (3). That was heavy enough. I was cleaning geese for 3 days..

I hate robo's, but I had to buy a few. Everyone has them on the refuge, and if you don't, most of the time you don't get the birds (in SoCal at least). Hunting down here is a lot different than when I lived up North. The F&G Commission is meeting tonight, and they "may" set the waterfowl regulations.
