I mainly fish for black bass on the Delta but been known to fish for stripers too. For the most part they coexist in the same areas and will pretty much crush the same baits. In a lot of these areas, the stripers tend to like the faster waters, a cast in the swifter current can produce a striper while a cast a few feet off to the calmer water will get ya a largemouth (depending on where you're at it could be a smallie).

I bought a new rod and reel combo back in 2006 or so, I think the bale closed as it was casting and it only went out about 25 ft in Martinez, uncle said just leave it so I did, ended up getting a nice 26 inch striper.

They'll hit your bait at the boat when reeling in so I'm not surprised.

My last one was a 50" in November. Salmon roe from the fall run. I like fire brine as it has worked well for curing. Have enough for the next few years. Grass shrimp and eel are always a good bait. Shimano terez with a avet sx and 50# power pro. Dacron leaders 8/0 hooks and 8oz lead. All 3 on outgoing tides. Finder/Sonar are a really good way to get right to them otherwise its hit or miss. Watch the fishing reports. After this ran we should see an even better bite for sturgeon.

            OP,

If your planning on using a charter and need some extra people to cut the cost, PM me. I've been trying to set something up with my friends and family but they don't want to pay up.

I'd run nothing but braid, I like to button down the drag and feel them really pull. By this time of the year they should be biting well on shrimp baits but it seems they're still on that salmon roe. I can't wait for salmon season, I only sturgeon fish to kill time. Not my favorite eating fish, meat is too tough, and not very fish-like. Good luck and swing for the fences.

That's an awful heavy duty setup for sturgeon. No not really if your off the bank.

Now that the water is chocolate it's just sturgeon fishing. It's to hard to catch Stripers on lures with muddy water.

Frank's tract? In half an hour landed large mouth, then a striper, then another large mouth, then another stripper, same crankbait got to break in my new gloomis crankbait rod

You'll find me on the west end of the Delta 90% of the time. I'm using a couple of their 7' MH's, love these rods. they works well with cranks, traps, spooks, etc.

ya im sure it used to be great back then... fuel costs, bait rod and reel usage adds up these days.

Im always open to people that have a boat, i have my own gear and get my own bait too unless someone can recommend a lower cost charter.

While jay on the right hook is very very good, he would be my number 2 capt to go with. I would go with John badger of barbarian sportfishing. If I recall correctly he is jays uncle in law, taught jay quite a bit. Best sturgeon guy out there hands down.

The 35.00 use to just cover you being able to get on board and having the bait supplied anything else was extra, and the Shark Fishing charters were 50.00.

Thankfully I have not had to use the charter boats for a very long time.
