What's the hunting and fishing like outside of Sacramento

    Besides expensive

I'm wondering if there is any public land in the Sierra Nevada foothills that is open to hunting. If so, what species of large and small game are abundant in that area?

Also, how's the fishing? When I was in Tahoe a few months ago, I saw signs for an outfitter offering ice fishing trips. It would be nice to still do that every now and then. What do people fish for in the lakes ponds and rivers out there?

There are national forests east of sac up 50, 80, etc. that hold deer, bear, etc. You can fish for trout and other species as well.

Within 2 hours driving of Sacramento, you have access to more hunting and fishing than you can do in a lifetime... all on public land.

Get a subscription to fishsniffer.com once you get here. It's a good starting resource.

Please be more specific. There's a lot of hunting and fishing options outside of Sacramento.

          Fresh water
          Salt water
          Big game
          Small game
          Birds
          Varmints
          Predators

I was thinking within an easy striking distance of the metro area. Maybe within a 2-3 hour drive.
