    Hastings Island?

Has anyone hunted Hastings Island Preserve?

    Is it really and island?

What do you think about the operation?

I know about the Bird Cards.

How do they conduct their hunts?

    What is the topography like?

I talked to Danielle and she was very pleasant.

    Thank you.

I just got back from Hastings about 30 minutes ago. I'll try to answer your questions. If you need more info we can talk on the phone if you like.

    1. Yes, it's an Island.
    2. First year member. I belonged to Birds Landing for 31 years. Lots of birds. Need to get accustomed to open field , rather than assigned fields. Lots of space to hunt.
    3. You can hunt anytime during club hours. They release additional birds throughout the day. Danielle is willing to set you up with a private field with 3-4 days notice. She seems to really care that you are having a good experience.
    4. Fields with various types of grasses. Lots of ditches.
    5. Follow the club rules. They get ticked off if you pass shoot.

      Larry,

      Thanks!

I am going to go for a 20 bird card, as recommended by Danielle.

What I don't understand is the chukar/dog training allowed after the end of pheasent hunting.

You can hunt chuckers longer than pheasants. Dog training almost all year long. Plus Junior, Senior and Masters dog trials and events. That's why my wife and I joined he club. It's much more than just a bird club. Lots of activities and events. We spend a lot of time there with our Brittany's.

There are many different bird card options....too many to list. The earlier you buy, the less expensive the card. Wait longer into the season you will pay more. Regardless, your looking to pay $27-$31 a bird. I don't know why, but Hastings pheasants seem to be stronger flyers compared to those I've shot at Birds Landing. Big birds too! My small Brittany cannot get a full size bird in her mouth. My other Britt's don't seem to have a problem in tha regards.

I think both have their pros and cons, hunt both before you buy in if at all possible. With these two as my closest to home option it makes me miss Suisun all the more.
