    Deer/small pig hunting rifle

I am in need of a deer, and small pig ( under 120#) rifle 90% of shots will be taken under 120 yards. I also have nerve damage in my shooting shoulder, so a lighter recoiling rifle would be preferred.
I was thinking if I was a deer, costal deer, or a " meat pig" and I had to be shot down dead what would bring me down the fastest? I would be aiming for a lung/ heart shot.

5.56 with the heaviest factory bullet

    300blackout 110- 125gr.

I want to use my SUR ( sport utility rifle) because of it being semi auto and buying a new barrel would be the least expensive way to go.

If you can take the noise on your ears the addition of a muzzle brake will do a lot to take away recoil also. I think the 6.8spc fits your needs perfectly.

People will give you many different answers on what the best ammo is but to make it short, please don't use a 5.56 on pig or deer. How can you guarantee a pig under 120 pounds and if there was a pig over that size are you saying you would not take the shot? If that's true then you have a lot of restraint. Use a round that will maximize success and has the power to make up for a poorly placed shot and that won't injure the animal and cause it run off. It always sounds easy to say that I'll just take a heart or lung shot but there are so many variables that you can't place your bet on making those shots. Pigs are tough critters so pick a round that will put the animal down quick and with the least amount of suffering. I was looking at the 270 winchester which seemed like a nice round with good availability so that might be worth looking into. Price is always a consideration so I understand where people are coming from to try and make what they have in their safe work with hunting but do yourself and the animal a favor and use something that will maximize success without a size and shot placement restriction.

270 is a great round easy on the shoulder.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

6.8SPC II (.270) has been my choice for the past 4yrs or so.

SSA 110gr or Rem 115gr rounds will work great out to almost 400yrds.

Barrel/bolt/mag follower swap will run about $400 DIY -

Get a new complete upper/mag combo for less than $700 and you're GTG.

Be sure you are getting a SPC II twist in higher than a 10x1 -

Otherwise you won't be able to take advantage of the newer/much better ammo.

                (Mine is a Bushmaster 16" 11.25x1 twist)

Ditto for the 6.8 I have couple. I handload what I need. For bigger game I am using hornady 110 gr bthp match. For smaller game nosler e tip 85 gr.

It's OK that was a good one!, I think most Californians have never seen a true High country or desert Mule deer and that's a shame because they are and can be magnificent animals and rival a lot of other states deer, sure they are far and few between yet they do exist and your not gonna find them tooling down the roads or around your campsite, they live in no-mans land.

Agreed. I've seen Az does larger than most "Cali" deer. My buddy says most CA deer are basically a large lab with antlers strapped on.
But hey, you get what you can when you can I guess.
I'm at a gas station in Rawlin, Wy on my way to buffalo for deer and antelope. Just doe tags, but meat is meat.
                      Now back on topic.
If your stuck with the AR platform, go with the 6.8 as mentioned above. Keep your distance to under 200yrds or get a 308 hunting rifle and enjoy.

                        Option A)

                        6.8 SPC upper

                        Option B)

(cheaper and better) Find a used .270, 7mm-08, .260, or .243. Those will all be more effective on your choosen targets. Option B #2) Pick up a used 30-06 or .308 and some "managed recoil" rounds which dramatically reduce recoil while still providing enough energy for your needs.

                        i.e. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/233...oint-box-of-20

                        Option C)

I just fell for more 5.56 trolling.

With an AR platform, I'd go 6.8 or a quality .223 round.

In all honesty why not a 243 bolt action with a muzzle break or a 243wssm in your ar?
