Year of the coot

For those that don't know 2013-2014 is the year of the coot so please remember to take 25 home with you. They make terrific dog food or plant fertilizer.

At some point about 6 or 7 years back I did see a guy take home a limit of coots. Although I never waste shells on them I will admit seeing 25 in a Toyota truck bed was a VERY memorable sight.

They have huge gizzards and they cook up real well.

I'm shooting them now because we have them everywhere. My thinking may be flawed but when the refuges are planting all this food to draw in ducks, I see hundreds of coots hanging out there and no ones depleting the population. It reasons to me that coots, populating unchecked, may push other ducks out of their habitat. I'll walk back to the truck for more shells if thats what it will take. Besides, they haven't learned not to fly yet, so it's even sporting.

Is my thinking flawed? I can't find anything online about my conspiracy theory.
