Duck opener at Barrett lake(San Diego)

My group scored first draw for the Barrett Lake opener this Saturday the 19th(and the following Wed/Sat).This will be my first hunt at Barrett.

I'm sitting here as giddy as a school girl. I already have my gear laid out , shotguns bagged up and my drink cooler waiting for ice. . Heck, I'm one step away putting my gear on and walking around the house with my calls out.

Tic-toc tic-toc! It feels like forever ago since last season, I'm ready to kill some ducks! I'll update this thread when I get back and as we go forward @Barrett.

Well, that was an amazing experience! I'm going back out on Wed(thanks to the draw) so we'll see how that goes...hopefully we didn't scare away the hundreds of ducks we couldn't get a shot at.

Nice looks like you did well. I might have to get a day or two in if it keeps up..... How many spots is there this year? How low is the water level. Last time I was there it was pretty bad and hard to find place to dock boat and spot to hunt.
If you don't mind me asking What area did you choose?

It was really low, I had never been before but it was obvious...it was lunar moon all around. There are 11 blinds this year. We made two blinds, one on this rock formation that would normally have been too deep to use that offered some great pass shooting opportunities. We had to go a good 50 yards to find enough brush to build them up, some spots may have been harder than others to do so by the looks of things.

The birds were flying a little high, and we all limited, but had they been a little lower we could have gone home by 9:30AM. By the end we were all just sitting around on the rocks kicking back, eating, chatting and jumping up to shoot every 20 minutes or so. We only hunted from the boat on the way back to the dock to fill one last hunters quota. He nailed a beautiful big hen merganser.

I can't give you the exact blind # as we're going back Wed and I don't want to blow it for everybody...we draw daily for blind choice but come Wed I'll be happy to pass that on.

All the blinds seemed to do well, I think operator error would be the only thing that would have kept a hunter from limiting yesterday. The sounds coming from that reservoir were intense, BOOM BOOM BOOM all morning long in that echoing canon...it was fantastic to hear. Not a whole lot of calling being done either, most of it came from our blind IMO, trying to bring in some huge(30-50+) flights that were up in the clouds.

I have hunted opening day couple years and has always been good.
Yea since new blinds idk which is which last time I hunted there were 20 blinds and usually ended up hunting either side of lake best hunting. Best hunting for me was always done on boat as I could check out rest of my blind area I haven't covered

              Wed pics.

Slim pickins, especially if you don't draw one of the last few blinds holding birds...came down to boat shooting, coot were collateral damage. I put up a pic with the water level so you can see just how low it is...it's like setting up a blind on the moon out there.

That's nice. It seems you don't need a waders on Wed. is it right?

Still used them, but a pair of hip waders would more than suffice.
