Help me with what tags I should buy!

Headed to Stanislaus national forest next week. So far I just have my general hunting license and upland game bird stamp. Last year I forked out $40something for a bear tag, got a pig tag, and got a booklet of bobcat stamps. I didn't get anything. I'm not really into deer hunting.

Anyone ever get a Bear or pig up there? I'm thinking I might just focus on Quail

You need to know the seasons. Mountain Quail closes Friday.

    Here is the quail map.

    Here are the upland seasons.

Look at the map. Depending on where you are you may be in Mountain Quail zone. You may need to find the regs that detail the zones. They are usually bounded by roads which will be named.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

I'm pretty sure spotted owl is covered under the upland stamp, but don't be fooled. The don't taste like chicken but more like gila monster tail.
We'll just give them the 'ol number 6.

I think condors are also. But I heard you have to use lead shots to bring them down.

I would personally not even buy a license. Wait for the snow and go rattle snake hunting.

Mountain Quail is open till Jan. 26.
The Sep 14 - Oct 18 season is an early season for Mountain Quail only in that zone.
You can also hunt Mountain Quail and all other Quail statewide in all zones during the regular season Oct 19 - Jan 26.

I've hunted there for a long time, taken a lot of bears from that forest. I've never seen any pigs.

Bear season closes on December 29th this year, or when 1700 bears are taken statewide. That link is supposed to show the current count, but it looks a little behind. Doubt that it matters, with us houndsmen out of the game, I'd be extremely surprised to see the season close early.

From that link, you can get to the seasons for anything. Squirrel is a favorite of mine. I hope to try turkey hunting this year, but I've hardly ever seen them in the Stanislaus.

Most of the area we hunt burned in the Rim Fire.

Thanks! And yes, I'm not sure what to expect with half of the forest burned up. I hope my area is still intact.

Any tips on bear hunting for a guy with no dogs?
