Yes, in some states it is mandatory. Typically they use slugs.

There is a reason that it's called buckshot.

Done it once! Keep in mind the shorter range. I do not recommend in California. Instead try Black Powder Hunting or Archery if you want to get close for the kill. They have special seasons.

Generally they hunt with shotguns in heavily wooded areas where the shots are not far and you want to limit projectile travel. 00 Buck shot can be used at very close shots (<40 yards) and rifled slugs or slugs with a rifled barrel (<100 yards).

As stated, in California deer are usually are hunted with rifles since the hunting is usually more open with longer shots. Also, realize that you can press a shotgun into shooting slugs; however, they make pretty poor rifles in general.

Shotguns with slugs are pretty effective pig guns if your shots are relatively close.

If you're in the condor zone, yes.

I have to ask...is there any particular reason why you want to use a shotgun?

if you can't use lead slugs (which is really the way to go, buckshot is usually used for the follow up shots if needed or so I have been told.) I believe there are some ammo companies that make copper type slugs.
I also know they use shotguns in northern East Coast states (think small states with dense forest) where the governments are concerned about high-power long range rifle bullets going too far and injuring someone(maybe in a neighboring state).

And that's a perfectly acceptable reason! I had a couple last year that a shotgun would have been real handy for, but it still wouldn't be my first choice.

                              3" magnum slugs -

But remember it a slow hnk of lead that bleeds off velocity quick.

Longest successful shot I ever made was with a 26" barrel and only about 50yrds from a tree stand....
