Kryptek Highlander Extreme Weather Jacket
First impressions:
The camo pattern is a beauty, the arms and body of the garment blend together seamlessly. You really get that Predator hunting mindset just by owning this! A trait talked about by the creators, Ex military members and experienced hunters.
The zippers are great quality with some type of material that semi closes over the zipped section eliminating any chance of water or debree entering through Murphy's law! The Velcro really is the best Velcro material I have owned, it sticks to the female counterpart with the smallest of available surface area and holds true.
The hood is zippered and removable, it's lined with two different materials internally, one being more rigid towards the brim, as to sit against a cap or hat.
The peripheral view is large for a hood, you can still see a fair degree to your left and right without having to turn your head. The hood has adjustable straps on left and right.
Internal wrist cuffs are great and are included, my arms are longer than most people so they do fit, but when wearing armor or hunting rigs it can be tight and cumbersome to me personally.
Arm pit zippers are available for cooling down during high output missions and general cooling down. They work great!
There are two internal pockets, one left one right. The right pocket has a zipper compartment with breathable mesh. The left pocket has an elastic top with a breathable mesh lining, slightly smaller but able to stretch to accommodate larger items.
The most important is the interior and exterior. The exterior is DWR treated and also very comfortable and quiet. Internally it's exceptional, less puffy than my Wild Things Tactical EWS and uniquely lined with an incredibly comfortable material, very smooth.
FIELD TEST:
The weather was a low of 17 and a high of 42, in the first week of March in Southern Colorado. *The mission was coyote Hunting, underneath my Kryptek EWJ I wore an Arcteryx fleece, and over that a massif combat shirt incase I got too hot.
We did about 4 miles of walking through the few stands we called, and only during mid day, I'm guessing low 40's I had to open the armpit zippers. During our stands, which lasted 15-20 minutes I was totally and utterly comfortable.
I was NOT sweating as we approached the stand, to only suffer the bite of cold as the moisture sits and freezes. I was able to focus on the hunt rather than making mental notes about personal comfort levels. Getting back into the truck I was not rushing the jacket off me, it does an incredible job at keeping you warm but it also breathes well for a tight fitting snug jacket.
CONCLUSION:
You really cannot beat the great value of this clothing! It has a great pattern that works in multi terrain, it does a magical job of taking the surrounding color scheme and reflecting it back to the viewer. Example, I stand next to green foliage and the green in the highlander pattern matches it flawlessly, now move a few feet to a dirt setting and the greens somehow fade into the more digital desert and flat dark earth tones, it's like wearing a chameleons skin.
The price is also outstanding, for such great materials and innovations you could expect to spend $400. For a little more than $200 you can own a great soft shell that will keep you comfortable through several climates. I cannot foresee any future hunts or cold weather excursions without my Kryptek Extreme Weather Jacket by my side!
More photos to come, and a Review for Kryptek Cadog Soft Shell Pants, krypton and Zeus Gloves!
