I've been trying to sell these remington pheasant loads with no luck on calguns. DOes anyone still use 7 1/2 shot for pheasant anymore? i thought these would sell great for 10.00 a box. Everywhere else online has been 13.00 to 16.00 a box. Would these be okay for dove? If so, I'll probably keep some of them for this coming season.

Honestly? For club birds, I'm killing them just fine with #8 shot out of my 20 and .410. I just use the same loads I use for skeet.I've been trying to sell these remington pheasant loads with no luck on calguns. Shooting over a good dog keeps them real close, and the 8's kill them dead with no mess.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

Let them get some distance in the air as its real easy to get itchy and turn them into a puff of feathers when they first fly up. I use a 870 20 youth. 21 inch barrel swings up real nice not too heavy and improved choke. usually #6 shot depending on whatever is behind the counter at the store. Thy are not too tough to kill.Comment

Barbie - Check out garcias hunting preserve. I think they are still doing dog training days where you can buy like 5 or 10 birds for a day. They aren't doing cards anymore this season as it's pretty late. I imagine other places closer to you are doing this as well.
Late in the season with the cover beat down I left the 7.5's at home and switched to a grab bag of 4,5,6's. My last day I used #4's exclusively as I was with the wife and needed 9 birds to tag out. At one point I had 6 birds in 9 shots with many in "the creek". Granted the bigger shot could tear them up more but I was hunting in some incredibly thick stuff where you may only get 1 shot. FWIW I have labs and the birds were running around so some shots were pretty far out there when they got up..Originally posted by jmonte35Disagree. Been trying to teach lewdogg21 how to hunt. I don't know about your shotgun but I got another barrel for my old 870 decades ago to use when pheasant hunting.
It was a 26" with a modified choke and worked pretty good on wilds.
Now I shoot a 20 ga with a cylinder choke on plants. The "holdovers" when you find them will only give you if your lucky one shot. They fly as fast and are almost as smart as wilds.
You learn not to waste the ammo after 30 yds and you learn to work better with your dogs

12 Ga. 28" Full
With the posting date, I assume you are hunting "club" birds.
Here is what to do: When the bird flushes, have a sandwich, then take aim & shoot. These birds have never been out of the pen, and are well fed. let them get out. let your pattern work and don't ruin a bird. Have a safe - fun hunt.
With wild birds, skip the sandwich.Comment

From my recollection shooting pheasants with a 12 gage full choke is too tight unless you want minced pheasant meat or you get a good head shot. IMO pheasants get up too close for full choke shotgun but if that’s all you have let the birds get out 20 to 30 yards before you let loose, and use number 6 shot low base shells. I use modify choke for pheasants with high base number 6’s shells, an improved cylinder is a good choke for pheasants too.Comment
