    Where to start

I've been interested in hunting for years, but just don't know where to start. I've been shooting all of my life but never had the chance to hunt. I guess the bigest question is how do you figure out how to field dress and butcher the damn things? Do any calgunners ever get together to hunt???

Start by taking a hunters safety course and getting your license.

OK...I'll get started with those suggestions. But, I'm hoping some nice calgunners will go out with me when the time comes. I don't know anyone else that shoots or is interested, so it's makes things difficult.

Interested in hunting as well. My current hunting license is expiring in three months and I haven't gone on a hunt yet.

Click the link. Then click on the "Advanced Hunting Clinics" link on the left side. There's a 2008 schedule of seminars on the clinics page.

There's a pig hunting class at Ft. Hunter Leggit in April. Costs $40.

The Big Game class (2-days) in May is for deer hunters but it's up in Williams Calif. (just northwest of Sac)

The September 20 upland class is making me drool. As is the Aug 2 pig class at Tejon ranch.

WE should REALLY support this program even if we are established hunters.

L.A. area. All the good hunting spots are 100 miles either North, East or South from here.

I'm in my Hunters safety class now... Ends next Monday! I'm registering for the Hunter Liggett Pig Advanced Seminar. I look forward to going on many hunts with all of you who are interested!

...now I need a new rifle. I think my 30.06 enfield may be a little dated and my AK probably isn't the correct choice. Thanks for the replies...hopefully see some of you soon! I'll post when/if I get the certificate...

Assuming you can shot it straight, your Enfield is a good choice for taking ANY large game in Ca.

I only hunted big game twice and that was over 23 years ago before I joined the military and got stationed in SOCAL. A few years ago I purchased one of the Remington 100th aniversery CDL 30-06 guns and mounted a Leupold on it with the intention of getting back into hunting. I've let everything else take priority and have yet to take any more steps. I need to get busy and set things in motion for a hunt.

Just with the iron sights, I can probably hit a milk jug at 150 - 200 yards. The rifle is pretty damn heavy for lugging around in the woods, and I think a nice scope is in order here. If push comes to shove and I have a hunt opportuninty before a new rifle...I'll definitely take my antique.

Congrats...I'm happy to see more people getting into the sport of hunting...Its been around for years and years and I hope it stays that way...Another blessing of our 2nd amendment rights...I'm also happy to live near the river where there is a good amount of duck, quail, pheasant, and geese in some spots during their season....If only I did not sell my hunting shotgun...Oh well, gives me an excuse to buy the Benelli hunting camo shotgun, forgot what model but sure is sexy...
