Actually, the wild turkey history is a bit different. European explorers took wild turkeys to Europe from Mexico in the early 1500s. They were so successfully domesticated in Europe that English colonists brought them back with them when they settled on the Atlantic Coast. Also the turkeys we have here are from all over the USA, not just the SE. The Merriams that were transplanted in CA came from SD for example.
"Native species" also does not require a certain time frame, if the species was there with no aid from man it's considered "native". Even the antihunter and Native Plant Society wackos recognize that there were native turkeys here many centuries ago, in their eyes they were different strain though than what we have today.
