How many Dfg regs do you think u break by accident

This other thread has gotten me thinking. Considering the mass confusion about Dfg rules and regulations, how often do you think you break a Dfg law? Knowing that many feel the rules and regs are very "grey", "misleading" or downright confusing especially here on this forum there are probably more violations occurring than we think. Then include the rules you may be breaking on a regular basis if a warden like the one our colleague in the other thread got cited for, things you may have always done and don't consider illegal

I'm sure in their eyes I have broken a lot more then I think I have. Probably enough to never be allowed to hunt in this state ever again. That is probably true for the majority of guys out there.

It's all the little stuff too. Like missing a lead #8 in your ammo bag when duck hunting, leaning a loaded gun against your truck when your taking your backpack off, not knowing you had to pay extra for a second pole on your fishing license ect....

For example I was ticked once when I was 4 wheeling for having no front license plate when I was in an OHV area.

None, I don't go out and take fish or game without knowing all current regulations. Not because I don't want to get a citation, but because I respect the resource, and want to hunt and fish with my kids some day.

Me too. Plus there are the ones I know I break and am willing to admit. Example: when somone kills a hog you are required to immediately tag it. Often times we will gut it out or drag the hog back to the vehicle before we attach the tag. I know it's against the law but tagging a hog then losing the tag in the brush during the drag back dosent make much sense. Neither does getting the tag soaked in blood making it unreadable.

Why would any law abiding hunter or fisherman NOT read and understand (to the best of their ability) the regs before going out? Furthermore, why would any law abiding hunter or fisherman do anything they don't know is legal?

In other words, anyone that willingly stays naive or does anything that they can't specifically say is legal, not just 'probably not illegal', is not doing their job as a hunter or fisherman.

Mistakes happen, but to remain ignorant of current laws and simply answer "I probably break a few obscure laws or something" is irresponsible.

Pretty legit in my book ^^^ I think filling out the tag when getting to the truck would be problematic though. Many choose to fill the tag on a buck when they get back.

A filled tag is a tagged animal when it in your possession physically.

The problem with many of the laws on the books is that there are many of them, scattered throughout the code, spread across multiple codes (penal and fish & game), and often difficult to understand after reading it.

Unfortunately, you can easily find yourself in a situation where you think you have read applicable laws and understand them but you don't.

For example, just try explaining transporting firearms legally considering the Fish & Game code, Penal Code (including local, state and federal).

I feel I am pretty up to snuff on the regulations, but when I hear about people getting ticketed (as mentioned above, for leaning a loaded gun against a truck) it really makes me feel like I am inevitably doing SOMETHING wrong. The other day a guy got a ticket at a local refuge because he stepped 2' into the grass instead of staying on a levee when duck hunting. I read through the refuge rules over and over and still can't find where that law is stated.

Or another law I was unknowingly breaking was using a fishing pole with a hook ABOVE my float for retrieving ducks in that water. Apparently a discretional law requires you to have a fishing license. Even if you have no bait, no lures, and are ONLY casting the thing at a dead duck. Just a bare hook above a float in a hunting refuge where half the people have similar rigs. This is something a warden can use discretion on, but there should be no discretion in hunting. The rules should make sense and be fair and understanding of how people operate in the field, especially those who try to do everything right.

I think part of the screening process for new wardens should not simply be a Biology background like they require in many states, but it should require them to have held a fishing AND hunting license for at least 10 consecutive years. This will bring in only those who have actually been around enough to understand what is truly right and wrong.

And don't get me wrong. I love what the wardens stand for and I ****ing HATE poachers. I have a lot of respect for law enforcement and always have at least 3 local officer's numbers on speed dial in my cell phone. I watch Wild Justice religiously and dream about doing what they do. Since I was a young child I wanted to become a game warden and part of me still does. If it wasn't for the job I have now paying all my bills and keeping me at home at nights, I would apply for the academy.
