Barnes Varmint Grenade = Bad day for Squirrels!

Sorry guy's......I made the photo more manageable and added a group shot!
    .243 62 grain Varmint Grenade at ~3750 fps........impressive!

I got ambitious and retrived a few for a group shot!
Ranges varied from 25 to 120 meters.....the splatter pic above was approximately 40 meters.

    enjoy!

Whoa! I think it's too much bullet for that kinda target. Looks like the shot cut the varmint in half!

    How far was target?

        Dude... fantastic results.

I've been using Ultramax .223 with 40gr V-Max in my 1/12 twist AR, and it looks similarly devastating. However, the velocity (and therefore flat trajectory) of those 36gr Varmint Grenade bullets has really got me thinking!

It's called a clean kill. Can you possibly imagine that the animal suffered?

Thats the wrong kind of squirl for eating. The red tail ones are the best. These ones are fun to shoot. There are to many anyway and need to be thinned out.

Dude, they're ALL fun to shoot.

The wife and I were in South Dakota for the holidays and we both got a chance to cull some prairie dogs. What an absolute blast! You'd think they'd all be hiding because of the snow and wind ... but the lack of coyotes this year has allowed them to let their guard down and hang out on their mounds.

I've added more detail (ranges and a group shot) in the original post and reduced the photos to downloadable size.

Results were about the same at 120 meters with this bullet.
                      Enjoy

is the squirrel population exceeding natural capacity?
as a general rule I am personally (personally, mind you) against killing things for sport without eating them. but if there are too many of these critters for the habitat to support then i suppose one has to do his duty to protect the environment.

I once killed a bird in my back yard... shot at it with an old romanian trainer air gun, didn't think i could actually kill the bird. well he died. i tried my best to dress the bird and eat it.. it was the nastiest thing ever because he wasn't quite dead... had to finish him off by sawing off the head... then peg out the still twitching body... all I was able to salvage was about enough to fill a chicken nugget.

i never shot at a bird again in my back yard.

Nice pics and an awesome bullet. Wonder if they make the Varmint Grenade in .25 caliber so I could reload it in my .257 Weatherby, maybe get that kind of result on something bigger.

Right now, they only have .243 and .224. They are good for coyote size critters and work great on the squirrels.

                            Enjoy

I'm really impressed with Barnes and their products. If you're even in Utah, call them and try to set up a tour of their plant. Also, if you ever get a chance, watch their mythbuster DVD.
