Before you shoot bear you better damned well know what you are doing! It takes knowledge to get it out and so much work you'll wish you didn't shoot it.

          This.

Unless your bear jumps in the truck and dies after you shoot him, you're in for a chore and a workout.

          Probably in the dark.

          5 miles from the truck.

          Alone.

With wolves and chubacabra's watching you.

And after you taste the meat, you'll never do it again.

If you can let the bear take a step forward with their near front leg to expose the boiler room that is a good shot when broadside. I wouldn't shoot a bear in the shoulder, too much muscle and bone. I've seen a couple broadheads stuck in a bear's shoulder that had been there for some time, couldn't even tell the bear was hurt either.

You'll never feel more alive then hunting bears knowing they can turn and kill you. Having one woof at you in low light in close will get the blood pumping.

If all that fails just shoot your partner in the foot. Like in dive training when they taught shark attack, you don't have to be a fast swimmer, just faster than your swim buddy.

                    This is very good advice.

If you want to know what it is like take 2 pair of your mothers pantyhose sew them together stuffed with 350lbs of jello. Then try and move it or drag it to your vehicle.

A wounded bear can be a very dangerous bear but normally they just run off and die never to be found. If you want to hunt bear the best shot is in the boiler room like Jesses posted, and if you take a head shot the target area is very small, the bones in a bears body are much thicker than a bull. Someone posted that a neck shot will drop a bear in its tracks, IMO that is totally incorrect under the majority of circumstances. When you target a bear’s neck it is almost impossible to separate it from the shoulder, the shoulder has 7” to 12” of muscle give or take that protect the spine/neck bone on any given side. You see that’s why they are called bears. A bear can be a formidable animal so don’t be fooled.

I suggest that you use a search engine to quarry the following, “where to shoot a bear to kill it:”

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

I have been lucky enough to shoot one black bear in california in the B-3 zone. This bear was 300 lbs. and 6' long. The color is blond and I had it mounted.

I have never worked so hard in all my life. If you read the regulations I believe there is a period you have to keep the head for the F&G.

I ate the bear but I can tell you if you miss one little piece of fat in the meat it can get gamey pretty fast. I was glad when it was gone from the freezer. I read about bear grease so I rendered some of the fat and put it on my boots for water protection just made my boots stink.

Enjoy and learn you will embark on a life time of great fun and adventure once you start hunting. You will learn about the red squirrel that wants to tell the world where you are hiding and the scrub jays are little tattle asses.
