No need for tongs. No rattler will climb the pole.
Just get a paint roller on a pole, cut the plastic roller off, and you have a 6 foot, 6 dollar hook. It's what I use.
Also, snakes are used to draping over things. Snakes are not used to being grabbed. Keep their stress low and you keep their defensive strikes low.
Be careful, of course, but if you spend some time watching snakes, they start to get VERY predictable.They're creating chaos

I was given one a couple years ago. As someone who isn't into snakes, I like using it when the snakes need to be extracted from a tight area or when I just want to move them off the road. It also works well for picking up litter around the property.

For what it's worth (and it might not be much) an eyelet or something similar screwed into a wooden dowl (at least 3/4" thick) and some parachute cord tied and looped through it works REALLY well for snakes. Been doin' that since I was a little guy.Comment

Just dont mess with rattle snakes, anti-venom is close to 5k a vile and you usually need 5-10 vile's to recover.
All other snakes can be handled by hand or a snake hook. Also please dont kill snakes.Comment
