Best round in .40 for a hunting side arm?

I recently had to sell my S&W 500 due to lack of work and had to do it to pay a few bills. Damn near shed tears over that
move. Anyways, I now only have my Glock 22 for a hunting side arm and am wondering if you guys and gals can put me onto a round that will maximize my pistols potential, I.E., make me FEEL a little safer if a big critter approaches? Any help would be much appreciated.

Ideally you would want a hardcast projectile for penetration, but ive heard glocks dont do so well with lead because of the poly rifling...

Id stay away from hollowpoints, they can expand and stop before getting all the way through the skin on big game.

It might sound funny but some steel core surplus might just be the ticket, works great for killing 2 legged critters as well

I have some corebon lead free hp's that I carry. But I'm gonna switch them up to something that will dig a little deeper into a skull of a bear, armor plate of a boar, or thick layers of clothing worn by the pot farmers.

I'm going to check out those Buffaloo rounds.
I have another question: what about a 357 SIG round? I have a conversion barrel for my Glock 22 that changes from .40 to .357 SIG. Would that round be better for a side arm purpose, and if so, what brand would you suggest??
Damn I miss my 500, haha.

The 40 is not really designed with hunting in mind.. so I'd think that your choices would be limited.. Unless you handload, you are pretty much limited by what you can buy.. all that being said, I think the idea of steel core surplus would be better than anything else if all you want is penetration.. I'd likely go for something flat pointed and FMJ over any other kind of expanding projectile. Flat pointed bullets, in theory, tend to do better than other things when penetration comes to mind.

the S.D of the .357 will give you the reach into the vitals from a fmj bullet, but then again what if something happens to your ammo as you are heading to your hunting location and need to buy .357 sig ammo at the last minute? .40 will be easier to find.

the only draw back about glocks is you can't use .40+P ammo on them, other wise I would have recommend this http://www.midwayusa.com/product/228...cket-box-of-20

I can't seem to find anything in .40 with a steel core. Can you point me in the right direction please? Thanks!

You guys can correct me if I am wroung but, if you have a side arm while hunting it must have exanding projectiles in it since it is illegal to hunt with full metal jacket. Also keep in mind if you are in the condor zone then lead is a no no in your side arm as well.

Interesting thread as I am trying to understand the hunting laws and sidearm choices for California. It seems odd to me that if a hunter carries a side arm for protection, the laws are such that the ammo most likely to protect the hunter is against the law and puts his or her life in danger. Maybe it's just unintended consequences.

Do/can game wardens carry lead-based bullets in the condor zone? Can they protect themselves from unexpected boar charging from the brush with said ammunition?
