    Knife Sharpeners

Picked up some knife sharpeneres to try out. They work pretty well on my hunting knives. I did a quick video review if you have the time check it out. Just some field sharpeners to keep in my knife pack at hunting camp. Thanks

    Okay video Perry.

The sharpener that I use is made by the same company and shaped like the first sharpener in the video demonstration. My experience is that more than light pressure is needed when drawing the blade back on a dull knife, it’s more like an even study pressure. I also positioned the sharpener on the edge of the platform so that when the blade leaves the sharpener it won’t hit the platform/table, wood block, etc.

The Lansky system does work well, I have been using one for many years. For overall ease of use, time spent doing it, and results I really like a 1x30 belt sander and a selection of 3-4 belts. I have belts in 80, 600, 800, 1200, and a leather belt for stropping. Using a setup like this will convex your blades but they will be razor sharp, strong, and easy to maintain. If I have been using my blade I just hit it on the back side of an old leather belt real quick and it comes right back to hair popping sharpness.

There is a commercial product out there that brings it all together for you that gets good reviews too, the WSKS system. Turner's has it for sale in their flier for about $70.00. I have never used it but it gets great reviews from places like Bladeforums.

Thanks for posting the vid, OP!

I'll stick to my Lansky + razor strop method.

IMO going to the point of leather stropping is not practical when in the field. The Redi -Edge sharpener is an excellent choice for field use, it applies a good edge and is quick to use but it will limit the life of a blade.

I had tried a few different sharpeners and just out of a "let's see" situation tried my axe blad sharpener that came with my axe. It worked better then anything I used to date and it's fairly compact as well.

Lansky is great, i can get an extremely fine edge without stropping. If its a utility knife or machete, i can just adjust the angle and still make it encredibly sharp without weakening the blade

I just bought this for in the field sharpening, it does a pretty good job, not razor sharp but puts a pretty good edge on in about 30 seconds. It is small, light and has a lanyard hole. Perfect to toss in a pack or your pocket.

I bought a couple of those to throw in the pack. They do seem to work well in the field.
