    Self defense against Bobcat?

We've had several bobcats and coyotes in our greenbelt lately, my brother and dog were almost attacked last night by one. What are the laws for an instance like this? Say the animal attacks my dog or brother, am I okay to shoot it if I have to? This is in a community with lots of children and pets, I wanted to know what your opinions were on this.

A bobcat would only attack a man if cornered or rabid. Otherwise they run away asap. I saw one run away from a 4 year old girl once. Are you sure it wasn't a mountain lion?

I wouldn't mind this, however about 600 houses will hear the gunshot lol

It could of been a mountain lion as we are right next to a nature reserve, but when I called animal control they said that it's unlikely that it was a mountain lion since they track them and it was most likely a bobcat.

I agree. I have bobcats around my place and they take off as soon as they see a human. But still, if you're having problems (coyotes and bobcats will munch on fluffy) call the OC ag dept. They probably have someone that will deal with the problem.

I don't see how they can help, they protect agriculture and not pets/people from being attacked from wildlife?

Not sure about OC but in Fresno County they have a "trapper" who deals with problems like this. He works in the Ag dept. Give them a call and see what they say. If no luck try DFG

Describe the incident where you were almost attacked.

A few years ago a neighbor's goats were getting eaten one by one by a mountain lion. He called fish & game to find out what his options where. They said you can shoot it in defense of your live stock. Just don't touch it after. They wanted him to call them so they could come pick it up. They don't want you poaching the fur apparently. So he hid out in a tree for a few nights and sure enough it came back. BOOM! No more mountain lion. Called Fish & Game and they came and picked it up right away.

As I was walking down the sidewalk when my brothers dog started barking. All of sudden out from no where as if the heinous creature just teleported out from a SG1 port, it came charging us. My brother dodged left and his dog right, I position myself in a defensive stance drawing my only weapon on hand, my car keys. As I drew I went into a weaver stance ready for impact, the creature vanished just as fast as it appeared....

The problem with this is that I'm in the city.

I'll try to get a more detailed description, but my brother was walking our dog late at night, came along some bushes by a house and heard some growling. As he started walking away from it, it lunged out at our dog while it roared. My brother got so scared that he yelled and ran away lol. I went back to see if I could find anything, but it was gone by the time I got there.
