    Tule Elk vs.

Hey hunter specialists, I was wondering was there a specific load of 5.56/.223 that I should be using for Tule Elk. I read in my most recent edition of Elk Magazine that they are the smallest of all elk; knowing that a 5.56 Nato can kill 300lb killer hogs that it has to be sufficient for smaller elk( funny some idiot was recommending a 150 grain .270 for minimium; I told him .270 was only available in 130 grain..duh..)

BTW I am 100 percent confident I will get drawn on an elk hunt at FHL this year so I want to be prepared...thanks in advance

Also would you recommend any ammo pouches to carry my 5 other mags in?

Oh, I am really a bowhunter and trying my hand first time at long range hunting..so please help me out.

damn. You beat me to the ".223 for elk" question after I did bears earlier this week. I better copyright the african big 5 b/c you know we are going there in probably 6 months of threads.

After the humour what do you really want to know?

im kind of new and was wondering why does every one want a excuse to kill something with 223? is the whole fan boy ar thing or is a 223 a under rated round? i prefer ak over ar,but im know enough that those are for 200lb humans not wild game?

after the .223 for bear, I figured Elk would have shown up sooner.

On another note, have you ever hunted FHL? I heard that active military that put in applications through the base have a pretty good chance of getting of drawn for either sex archery tags.... any insight? Seems like it conflicts with the whole DFG system to me...

I have killed many of thingymajigs with a .223 including paper zombies (how many of those have you killed noob?) What is a fan boy? Is that what peacocks are called at full strut? Speaking of peacocks, can I shoot them with my 5.56 55 grain boolits in a 1/9 twist? Do I need a tag for them?

                  Frank,

This is awesome, just the type of feedback I was looking for to prove the superiority of the .223. Was this wild boar taken at BHCR (this is a boar right?) charging you fast? How many rounds of your 5.56 oh sorry .223 were you able to get off to kill this beast ethically? Did your guide recommend 55 grain and you just chose to take your chances with 70 grain instead?

PS..My friend says its a water buffalo..hahaha I just laughed at him because truly that pic was in California

Sorry to say you are wrong and that your friend is indeed correct. Its a water buffalo, which I believe is available at the Big Canyon Ranch these days. Just wait for hogs to clear the pins first, then the big boys come out.

FMJ, spray and pray and just let it bleed out if you actually hit it. Good to go.

Why would you want to carry 5 extra mags when hunting? Are you a speed reader? I typically only find time to read my primary mag and start on a second one. Well, unless I'm hunting water buffalo. They are really boring to hunt so, I could see someone spending more time focused on the latest edition of Cosmopolition than focused on tracking a bull buff through 8' high grass.

Ok guys, here's the secret. As long as your bullets have a nifty colored ballistic tip then you can kill anything with .223 (did you know it's actually .224caliber though?) from squeaks to teradactyls. I have found that the red color tips found in the 75 gr Amax are the most lethal color. Nosler makes some cute ones with purple tips that I also have found to be equally as lethal. It's all about picking the right color.

Bowhunter619 - It's almost as if you've been here all along and am of the same mindset as myself, taperxz, toby, pieeater, and a few others lol.

Fjolds Cape buffalo was indeed shot at BHCR (ignore the entire thread about how it charged him in Africa, lol. No really search to find it's it's a great read).

As far as Elk I have no idea how easy it is to draw but I will say that hunting elk in the rut with a bow is the most fun you will ever have.
