    Tejon Ranch Hunting?

I want to hunt but I don't want to deal with intricate county laws or yahoos, so I was thinking about buying a Spring Access pass at Tejon Ranch for $900:

That allows you to "camp, hike or hunt varmints, squirrels and coyotes" on all 270,000 acres from 2/11 to 8/24, and even bring a guest for 5 days. You can add pig hunting (2-animal limit) for another $450.
    Expensive? Yes.
But what isn't? All-in, I spent more on my last AR build.
Six months of access? That's a lotta weekends.

You are allowed up to 5 guest-days during the Spring Access with the Family Addition. The family add on is another cool $400. And yes you can add the pig hunt to that for ANOTHER $450

Also, I think the Tejon Ranch now restricts lead ammo and I'm sure most of those intricate county laws you speak of still apply.

Yep -- I just did some reading up on their "lead-free" status.
It would be one thing if I was just interested in pigs (some Barnes or Lapua copper bullets would work), but I don't see any lead-free .223 available for varmints. (I presume they sell lead-free ammo on the ranch at an inflated premium.)
And, yes, I misread the "friend" bit. Thanks for correcting me. Doh!
All that said, my last hunt was for deer in Colorado, and the out-of-state tag alone ran me about $325. Then tack on the 21 hours of driving there, 21 hours back, the total of 7 vacation days for the trip, etc. (As they say, time is money.) That one outing probably ran me $1,000 in cash on top of all that (gas, food, supplies, etc.).
Tejon may be expensive and they have their own rules, but it's also just 60 miles away, and I would have the run of the place for six months. It being so close is worth something, and that's part of what I'd pay for.
Finally, I should have been more specific about the "intricate county laws" bit. I had been reading another thread about hunting in LA County. If I'm not mistaken, the Ranch is in Kern County. I'll have to check up on it.

I've wanted to get the Spring Access pass for years, but I just cant justify spending the money.
I even considered buying the Spring Access and then having a buddy pay $100 a pop for the 5 guest passes. No takers...

If we can get 21+ people together I can get a weekend unguided pig hunt with NO Limit for $450 per person.

One solution, albeit expensive, is to load your own. Midway USA lists an all copper Barnes 45 gr X bullet. Unfortunately they are $.50 a shot just for the bullet.. $25.49 for 50.. You could also look into purchasing Frangible 224 cal bullets and load them yourself, those too will be kind of pricey.. but they are usually copper jacketed and a sintered iron core.. Doesn't hurt the barrel but they pretty much disintegrate on impact. You can buy frangible 223 ammo, At one point ammoman.com had some, you can probably find it with a web search.

Edited to add that I saw the grenade bullets, but didn't know anything about them.. Brass bullets.. cool!

Midway also has Barnes Varmint Grenade all brass bullets that are cheaper.

The 22 caliber, 36 grain Barnes varmint grenades are $15.79 for a box of 100.

These bullets are about the same length as a conventional lead bullet but because they are so light you can get these bullets going close to 3,800 fps in a 20" barrel.

Every couple of months I ask this question.

WHO HERE HAS HAD A SUCCESSFUL HUNT AT TEJON RANCH?

The last time, some yahoo sent me a Tejon Ranch brochure. Duh. I know one guy who bought the pass and took his kids squirrel hunting there. And another guy who bought the pass once. Never again they said.

Tejon Ranch was the first to buy into the lead ban. They have a huge piece of property they are developing.

Yeah, I'd like to know someone as well who can vouch for the ranch. I'll look into it. Wonder how they feel about OLLs for varminting...

from what i hear, they are not friendley in any way, oll, or just person to person, they feel like they are doing you a favor by taking $1000+ from you to let you hunt on their property. a friend of my told me this when he went there to hunt. he left pretty quickley after he got there, it all had to do with their ammo, and what guns they allow. which isnt much, besides bolt actions.

I've had the spring pass for a couple years. I stopped getting it when they took the unguided turkey hunts away that were $450 extra.

For me it was a 2 hour ride from home, 1 hour from work and the best bobcat, coyote, hog and squeak shooting I've seen in CA. The next closest spot as good is 5 hours for me.

Back when I had the pass your pig was part of the $1000 and each pig went down in price after that. Now there are wacking you pretty good for each pig.

It's a great place to camp and many times I never saw another person the whole weekend while out shooting or exploring. A couple buddies also have the pass but they use it mostly for squeak shooting with their .17s. With no .17 green ammo yet they are going to pass on this year. Looks like I am too.

Bottom line, if you live in the L.A. basin you can't beat it for a private spot. 2 hogs trips north will cost you that. If you're gonna buy a pass it I'd get it ASAP. Tejon is already laying the infrastructure for 3 planned communities. That ranch is one of the most beautiful places I've ever laid eyes on and that develppment is going to ruin the whole deal. Sad really. Maybe 2-3 years left before they build 18 freakin golf courses there.

P.S. Lot of bad info on here like bolt only rifles etc. Check the facts to make sure. I've used my lever 30-30 several times.
