I have read numerous time on this forum of shooting jackrabbits and leaving them to rot.My understanding is that jackrabbits ARE game animals and the practice of shooting and leaving them would fall under the wanton waste laws of the DFG.please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Killing Jack Rabbits?

For the life of me, I don't understand why people don't use them. It's great for stew.
Now obviously, if you shoot them with .223 or greater, there isn't always much left. But you're right - no one is supposed to leave game in the field, and you're supposed to harvest the meat.
Now some will argue that the law talks about "commonly" used parts - which is what you're supposed to harvest - and some people just can't imagine eating rabbit or jacks. Their loss.WTB: French & Finnish firearms. WTS: raw honey, tumbled .45 ACP brass, stupid cat.Comment

Wanton Waste Applies to all GAME animals, Jacks included. Though it is very common practice for people to leave them in the field, it is ILLEGAL.
Non-game animals you can leave in the field, like coyotes and ground squirrels. The only Non-game animal that you need to make an effort to retrieve is Crows.
Jacks make great stew! If you are not going to eat jacks, DONT SHOOT THEM!Hic Ego Statio
