    I am doing it - Hunters Education in Reno

    I have signed up for a hunters education in Reno for February this year. I was wondering if I need to take hunters education again once I move back to California? Thanks.

    No you don't need to take it again. At the end of the class you'll receive a hunters education card and you just show it at a sporting good store at any state, and you can purchase a license anywhere in the country.

    "sir...does this mean ann margaret's not coming?"

      A: Resident, nonresident, and junior hunters must present ONE of the following when applying for an Annual California Hunting License or Two-Day Nonresident Hunting License as proof of meeting California's hunter education requirements:
      An Annual California Hunting License issued in any prior year;
      A Two-Day Nonresident California Hunting License issued after the 1999/2000 license year;
      A California certificate of hunter education completion or equivalency with a unique number imprinted on it (for example: AA00000) or a California hunter education certificate with no unique number imprinted and a California hunter education validation stamp affixed;
      A certificate of successful completion of a California-approved hunter education course from any state or province; or
      A current hunting license or a hunting license being issued in either of the two previous years from any state, province, European Country or South Africa.
      I don''t know if the Nevada course qualifies as "California-approved hunter education course from any state or province", but if you also pick up a Nevada license that will work.

        some stuff changed that FAQ might actually be out of date
        for example, i dont think another state license qualifies any longer, unless that state requires an equivalent class to ours, I'm not positive on that, i will have to check, and see about getting the FAQ updated

        at the top of this page is some web sites you can use to study

        this one is completely free

        Nevada, is part of 'International' so I dont see why it would not qualify.
        I looked at their materials last time i was there and it looks pretty much the same as ours, excepting state specific areas.

        is a good resource for state information

              Heck CA even takes my out of state hunting class I took at University (for course credit, go rural schools) as acceptable proof.

                I just confirmed with DFG
                Yes all 50 states Hunter Education are accepted by CA DFG, as well as European country and S Africa.
                and yes, a License from any state in last 2 years is still valid.

                      I have a CA hunting license but lost my HS certificate years ago. Yes I could always renew my CA license by presenting a previous one.

                      Here's the kicker: I attended college in CO in the 1970s. Full time students qualify as residents when purchasing a hunting license there. I bought licenses there every year. Well come 2011 I was planning a hunt back there again. Contacted CO DOW to inquire about a license. ANSWER: I could not purchase a license W/O a HS certificate regardless of holding a current, valid CA hunting license. I even asked if they kept records of licenses issued in the 70's...but missed by a few years. So I postponed my hunt till this year and took a second HS course this last fall.

                        Yep, CO started with that maybe 3 years ago, they would renew until you let it lapse.
                        Your best option would be to take a Home Study Course
                        go to the link i gave above and pick a class in your area.
                        just get the study book, and then take the follow up course
                        I'd be happy to send you the study guide if you PM me your mailing address.
                        or of course study on line http://homestudy.ihea.com/
