    range of 00 buck

Went out this morning to try to call in some coyotes and had good luck, too good of luck. I was in a elevated rock pile and I heard the coyote came up from behind me before I could see him and walked right in front of the rock pile. It was about 10yds. I didn't have a shotgun so I waited. It walked toward my friend who moved to look at it and it ran right up the rock pile at me, saw me and took off with out a shot fired. OK to my question. I have some 12ga 3" 00 buck 15 pellet shot at home. What is the effective range to kill a coyote with this out of an 18" barrelled 870?

    I personally wouldn't shoot past 45yards.

I'd take a shot 30 yards out without thinking about it with 00 uncle buck. -g

Normally what size barrel do most people use to hunt coyotes using the coyote loads or hevi shot?

I would feel comfortable with a 45 yard shot. 00 buck seems to stay tighter alot better than bird shot. In academy we were shooting silhouette steel targets and you could see the impact on the steel. At about 45 yards it only had about a 12" pattern. So I would say go pattern the gun and see what it does and what your comfortable shooting

Since it is "Buck" shot, I wonder how far out people have used it to kill deer?

18" barrel and 3" oobucks. I've personally shot water jugs at 60-70yds with my buddies mossy and the jugs still ends up taking multiple bb hits. buck shots holds together better than bird shot.

Well things / people have been hit with bucshot from 300yds and more. Safetly I would say 75yds is a realistic range.

#4 buck, bb or bbb would be a much better choice for a coyote load.

As others have said going down to #4 buck will put more pellets in your pattern and increase chances of getting a lethal hit. Max range would be ~40yds.

Take your shotgun out and pattern it with your load to see where it hits and what the pattern looks like at different yardages. Everyone zeros their rifle, but few truly know where and how their shotgun hits at different yardages.
