Am I set to start coyote hunting?

So I have plenty of camo head to toe, I have an e-caller made according to the set up on Varmint Al's page, have a shotgun with a GOBBLE-STOPPER XTREME choke, Dead Coyote T, #4 buck, and AR pattern rifle with camo wrap tape, .223 hollow points set for the gun, and a few places that I think I can make work for stands (I am guessing they are popular but I have to start somewhere). I have read the crap out of this board, the Cal predators board, and a few others.

SO all that being said besides a butt load of patience and knowing how to sit still is there anything else I need to go out and attempt to play wack a yote? Hunting has bit me hard and I have been out with a few other people for bunnies and birds but as a duck hunter branching out I am new to this part. Hopefully I can hook up with someone down the road but am I missing anything for a first timer to go out and try his luck/skill?

    Hello,

Heck man, you're more geared up than I am!

I just grab an iron-sighted Mosin or Gewehr 88, a few stripper clips, and go out and shoot 'em.

If I need to call them in, I howl or chirp like a squirrel. I've had them come on a dead run with the howl. I was actually affixing the bayonet and getting ready to draw the 1911!

I just lay prone using a hill for cover and shoot them.

Orange is a good idea, but not absolutely necessary unless required by law.

So, short answer: You're way more than set!

    Regards,

    Josh

You missed the shooting stick and at least one hand call. IMO you will have better odds at the end of August beginning of September.

I'm not far from you up at the 110 freeway and 91. Always looking for hunting buddies to share gas. I also just started coyote hunting. Called one in to 80 yards a few weeks ago, but was using a shotgun and passed up the shot. I think I have some better areas to hunt now, but need to split gas, as my truck costs me $100 to get out. I was out hunting rabbits a couple days ago and found some fresh coyote sign. Obvious bedding areas fresh, plenty of fresh poop, and dead eagle feathers not very far from a guzzler. I'd like to set up a stand nearby and give it a try- let me know if you're interested. I like to hunt coyotes in the morning, blast jackrabbits through the day, then make a stand at dusk again for coyotes.

Be sure to play the wind in your favor you also might want to make or purchase a decoy. I place mine near the caller and yotes lock in on it and don't see me raising the gun.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

Patience is a good thing but I wouldn't call for more the 15 20 minutes and if you don't get a yote move to another spot. I like a mouth call representing a squirrel for close in work. Enjoy the new hobby it is a great way to enjoy the day.

I can't think of a worthwhile funny smart *** comment, even thought that equipment list is begging for one. Do you have a 4x4?

All that remains is field time. Have you done some target shooting from positions similar to how you will be hunting? After that, it is all scouting and hunting. Just gotta get out there.

SO why is the list beggin for a smart *** comment? Not anticipating carrying all that stuff at once necessarily or that being the end all be all list. Unlisted is the standard stuff to take out for deer/duck/wabbit/dove/quail. I am just learning. And yeah I have done positional shooting.

No 4x4 and I know it hinders but still got to start somewhere.

If you have a gun you are ready for coyotes. I don't use camo or a caller but i get a few coyotes each year. You can bait them with dead squirrels or animal guts and scraps from a butcher shop. Just toss them in a bucket for a few days until they get "rip" and then take it out and open it up. you can stay down wind so the scent maskes your scent and wait.
