    Pole and lure weight explained?

I have re-kindled my love of fishing (20 some year abscence) and charter boat Rock-fishing is my target!
So..... please explain to me what exactly do I need to look for in a rod. I have a couple Ugly Stik Charter Boat rods and have had great fun with them on 3 trips this past year. But, when looking at the rod info it says they are to be used with 2-6oz lures when typically you use 1lb weights and rock-cod rigs. Am I missing some fun here by using the wrong rod? Am I ok with dropping to the bottom with a heavy weight and hauling it up with these rods, or am I missing the "fight"?

By the way, my last trip out last week I watched a couple, who had never been on a trip before, haul up big Reds and a few Ling-cod and they were fishing the same rigs I was! Was a blast watching them and that is half the fun!

Calguns is a wealth of info in the fishing section but if any of you know where I can garner any knowledge on rock-fishing I would greatly appreciate it.

with those rods you should be fine. My rock fish rig is rated for lures up to 2oz and I was using 4 pounds of weight on my last trip. Just crank slowly if you're fishing deep cause you can spin fish off if you wind too fast.

There is no fight when you fish rockfish. Ling can be fiesty.

Sounds like you're shallow water fishing if you're only using 1 pound weights. Just about any rod is ok for that type of fishing.

My preference for fishing rockfish is about 100 fathom water. Typically need at least a 5 poubd sash wieght, a stout rod, reel that's properly geared and spectra to help the gear drop fast before you drift over the rock pile.

100 fathoms! Wow!, no 1/2 day boats there I'm guessing. Sounds fun. Would really like to get on some light tackle trips this next season. Any ideas? Oh. currently have a Penn 500 and a Penn 209 Level-wind that I found on e-bay. Got a Shimano TLD20-40 for CHRISTmas but didn't get to use it when I went out the 26th. Really like that 209 on my 6' Ugy stick. The 500, I think, needs some maintenance!

I never pay attention on that lure oz stuff. I just buy my rod based on line lb range, action, length and power.
My go to rockfish setup is :
Rod: shimano calcutta 12-25 lb medium heavy power extra fast action 7'6 ft. Rod 3/4-1 1/2 oz lure wt.
Reel: daiwa saltist 20 levelwind loaded with 40lbs of braided line. With that line im able to use a much lighter weight and feel more bites.
Im not a big fan of ugly stick because they are too flexible. I like using rods that have a stiffer backbone so I can feel the line for biting fishes.
Oh yeah rockfish season closes jan. 1 2012 til march 1 2012.

            That depends where you're fishing.

Make sure you load the reel with Spectra...not Mono. Spectra has no stretch and you will feel every nibble with those deep water fish. Also Spectra lasts forever.
