Yes, It's legal to shoot them on my property. Oh, that's not the question.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

I have seen videos of guys killing full size boars (hogs) with certain types of air rifles - maybe get one of those. I have a buddy who lives in a nice gated hood in Irvine, and he had a small rabbit problem...that he no longer has.

You can shoot a coyote if they are an immediate threat. If you or another person/pet/livestock is in danger, you have the right to defend yourself or others.

Check the laws. Call animal control. Set traps. Call the OC Chief of Parks. Because if you shoot one and it’s not a drop dead shot they can holler so loud that the sound will draw unwanted attention to what you just did. And if you use a bow and the coyote runs off people might see a coyote with an arrow in it and that might start an investigation. Good that you asked before you did something stupid. You would need proof that you were threatened if you use that.

I use a pump up 22 cal pellet gun works fine at 50' ear shot kills / gut shot they run off and die later or get eaten by pack.

Haahah lol, yeah it does sound kind of funny, but thats just what I've heard, sounds unlikely though.

Yeah I've heard my neighbors little 5 lb dog get snatched and eaten by a yote before, was not a pleasant sound at all!

Coyotes are extremely agile. They can easily jump up a 6ft wood picket fence and walk along the top like a cat. Seen it in my own back yard. A coyote can also easily take down a 30 lb dog. They grab it by the neck and the pet typically goes into submissive mode rather than fight. Coyotes are getting bolder following people walking dogs on a leash and trying to take the dog. A coyote bit a small child on the Huntington Beach last week.

This^. No one can guarantee there won't be consequences, but you should do what ever you need to do to protect your family (including pets). I've never heard of anyone getting a serious charge over a legitimate case of defending a pet or person.

That said; looking into things like air guns, compound bows, & crossbows is a good idea - why attract attention if you don't have to. Also getting to know your neighbors and their propensity to call the authorities would be a good idea (don't say anything incriminating in the process).

For the most part going back there with a weed eater & creating as large as possible of a clearing and installing solar motion lights will discourage them from using that area. You can also add a motion sensing alarm in that area. Over time they will make paths around you further away and migrate to areas they like better (it won't prevent them ever coming in this area, but they will over time find areas they like better). Also make sure there's nothing near your yard that is drawing them in (a rabbit nest for example).

Pop them in the nuts with a pellet gun like the Israelis were doing to rioters with their silenced 10/22s

I bow will get you in just as much trouble. They will keep coming back. The more you kill the larger the void that will be filled by other coyotes.

This sounds reasonable, but we are in California where being unreasonable rules the day.

A criminal will get zero bail for a crime. Actually in San Jose, California 2 guys were given bail when they were (are ) on trial for murder.

A regular guy shooting a coyote or mountain lion in his back yard to protect his pets or family might face some bs trouble from the local authorities and even animal rights organizations.
