Interested in pig hunting in Norcal

So I have a bud who just got his hunting license, we are range shooting buddies and he wants to try pig hunting now. He has a .308 Rem bolt rifle.

My question, what rifle would you guys pick to purchase. I am not sure how much I would like hunting pig. never hunted anything in my life. I heard everything from you might pick one off longer ranges 75-100 yards (bolt rifle)
or close range 50 yrds in brush (lever action)

I like the look and feel of lever guns, but I feel a bolt action with a detachable mag might be used more by me if I decide I don't like hunting pig.

so lever action? Like a 94 or Marlin 336 (30.-30.)

Or bolt rifle in .243 or larger ?? caliber ??

I've killed piggies with 270 and 7mag. I think anything in that general area will be fine.

Skip the .30-.30. If you want a lever gun, you can still get one in .308. I'd just get a bolt gun, yu can hunt deer too...

As long as you can kill the pig humanely and quickly, it's really just personal preference. A bolt action from .270 and up is a very popular choice. Lot's of guys use levers. A nice Marlin lever in .45-70 would be very effective.

Think about what else you might hunt with it, that may help with your decision.

Stay away from detachable magazine fed bolt actions. One less headache if you need a quick follow up shot on a PO'd pig.

I've killed pigs with anything from .243 to .30-06. Currently I use a Ruger M77 .30-06. I have had great success with my Marlin .30-30 lever gun too. I've even used .357 magnum and .45 ACP, both of which people say can't kill a pig reliably. Sorry, I throw down the BS card on all that. My wife currently uses the .243 with deadly effect on hogs, using Hornady 95 grain SST ammo.
Pig hunting is fun. Pig meat is awesome if the field care, aging, and cooking is done right. And as long as you have tags in your pocket you can shoot pigs all year long.
Find a nice used Remington, Ruger, or Tikka in .308 with decent glass on it. That will do the trick. Don't stress on detachable box or top loader bolt action. Make sure you can make a solid first shot and you won't need to reload.

"What rifle is best for pig hunting?" should be a sticky!

Bolt! No, lever! No, semi-auto! No, .223! No, 30-06! "My cousins friend killed a pig with sling shot!" No, you need a wrist rocket! Head shot! No, lung shot! No, break their shoulder! No, flame thrower, it cuts out a couple steps in processing!

I'd buy what ever rifle you like. I like brownings. Hunting sucks when you have a crappy rifle so buy something that you would still enjoy carrying around after 6hrs of walking up and down mountains with no food in your stomach. I always "feel" better with a nice rifle.
