The New CA DFG ALS Hunting License System.

So I got my new ALS (Automated Licensing System) set up earlier this week. I guess they had me sign up for log in names and all of that months ago, but I forgot most of that crap and have been busy doing other things.

A good customer of mine comes in last night around 4:30 and wants a hunting license. This motivates me to get it logged in. After talking to tech support and searching for old documents, I got it done.

AWESOME! This thing is going to be so great for everyone.

Here were my number one complaints about hunting licenses.

#1: I MAKE NO MONEY ON THEM! I mean the margin is so small that I think when you use your credit card, I am just about breaking even.

#2: It takes up a lot of my working capital. If I order enough hunting licenses for my peak times, I am tying up thousands of dollars into product that again, makes me so little money.

#3: The DFG is corrupt and has crazy turn in dates. My first year of selling licenses I didn't notice that the big game licenses are different than the regular licenses. I turned in my unsold tags late and they just kept my $400!!!

#4: It sucks to run out of licenses and have to turn people away.

Most of those problems go away with me just printing out your licenses as I go.

First, it costs me nothing. I get charged when I print a license and you give me the money at the same time.

Second, I will never run out of licenses again. Plus I have access to every license there is INCLUDING BOBCAT TAGS!

    Third, fishing licenses too!!!

Seriously, this thing is awesome. There is no reason to go to a license agent that has paper licenses ever again. This new automated system is so easy and so great, I love it!

It is about time CA DFG.

It is available now. It just depends on the license agents if they want to go through with it or not. Any license agent stuck with paper is a fool in my opinion. The computer is going to save the day!

So the new tags/stamps/licenses are waterproof, but if you have them in the sun or heat they will fade. That seems smart...
They have the ALS at Big5 now, the employees should probably learn how to use it.
I do like not having to mail in for bear or bobcat tags though.

I can see the sun and heat being an issue for fishing. However, have we confirmed this paper will melt yet? The paper is pretty fancy. I will cut a strip, stick it in plastic and set it out in the sun as a test.

Why worry about the sun? At least for a hunting license. They need not be displayed in normal circumstances. A fishing license is to be displayed but they are in a holder.

Most of the holders seem to be clear plastic and so it is an extremely valid concern for fishing licenses. Judging on my quick handling of the paper last night, I think they took this into consideration and it should be fine. Again, I will test if for you.

Fishing licenses no longer have to be displayed on your upper body. Just have to be in your possession, just like the hunting licenses.

I got my bobcat tags at the Los Alamitos DFG office the other day. It took a bit for all of them to print out, but they are now thin enough to carry with me all the time.

Also, getting tags immediately and local will be a plus!

12 years and millions of dollars down the crapper as the vendors milked the DFG and strung them along for years. The contract was written with NO performance bond or deadlines. IMHO someone should have been sued and a few DFG employees fired over that debacle.

And folks wonder why CA is broke?

Q: Do I have to wear my fishing license?

A: No. As of March 1, 2010, anglers no longer have to display their sport fishing license on their outer clothing above the waist. However, their sport fishing license must still be in their immediate possession while fishing, except when diving as provided in Fish and Game Code Section 7145.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Wait, does this mean I have to turn in my crank phone and do away with the party line we currently share with 50 others????

Just kidding. I got my CAL duck stamp through the elcetronic system and have no issues other than it is MUCH larger than just a stamp
