    Ft Stewart managed hunt.

Last saturday I was lucky enough to be drawn for a managed hunt on base. A couple times a year they draw a few names of Soldiers and retirees and open up some range areas that are generally off limits to hunting for an absolute slaughterfest. The goal is to put a little dent in the population of hogs and deer because they tend to become quite a nuisance on the ranges.

Well, there were 50 names drawn, put together in groups of 5 hunters and assigned areas with fixed stands to hunt out of for the day. We got in to the stands before daybreak, stayed up until the early afternoon then broke for lunch. After an awesome BBQ lunch provided by the MWR and local merchants we hopped back up in our stands to hunt until dark.

They provided skinners to help clean and quarter everything that was taken during the day and man were they busy!

Unfortunately, our group ended up drawing the worst area and no one saw a single critter the whole day! Oh well, it was fun to get out and BS with a bunch of others and watch the skinning rack and coolers get filled up.

The largest hog taken was 190lbs and the largest deer was a 160lbs 10pt.

Very nice. That will make some fine eating.
