We headed up to a little secret spot near Buelton for an evening hog hunt. There was 3 of us and we set up on the ridge of a little canyon just before dusk. My buddy was 60 meters to my right and my boss was 60 meters to my left. All of sudden I hear a single shot fired off to my right. 10 seconds later I hear my buddy yell "It's coming your way!!"
I can hear the beast running but cant see it yet. A few seconds later, the hog crests the canyon about 40 meters from me in a full out run. The first shot from my Marlin Guide Gun .45-70 hit right behind him. The second shot hit him center mass. He stumbled and kept on going. The third shot hit him just above the left shoulder and he went down.
I walked down to the bottom of the canyon and instantly picked up the blood trail. About 40 yards from where I saw him go down, I spotted the hog standing up and still. Knowing he was wounded, I took the high ground about 40 feet above him. By this time I had slung my rifle and had my Sig P220 loaded with Buffalo Bore .45 acp +P FMJ. I was in a quartering position at his rear and placed a shot behind his left shoulder. That's when the real fun began.
He got pissed, turned and charged me. He jumped a shrub that was between me and him and I fired 4 shots. All 4 shots hit him but the last 2 were head shots and he went down 8 feet in front of me.
The boar was 320+/- lbs and had the biggest tusks I have ever seen on a California hog. That was the first time I have been charged and to be honest, it was a pretty cool feeling. I have major respect for these animals. It's pretty amazing what they can endure.
Oh and BTW, that rifle my boss is holding is a Remington MSR .338 Lapua!! There are only 2 in the civilian world. Amazing rifle
