    So I went hog hunting....

We headed up to a little secret spot near Buelton for an evening hog hunt. There was 3 of us and we set up on the ridge of a little canyon just before dusk. My buddy was 60 meters to my right and my boss was 60 meters to my left. All of sudden I hear a single shot fired off to my right. 10 seconds later I hear my buddy yell "It's coming your way!!"

I can hear the beast running but cant see it yet. A few seconds later, the hog crests the canyon about 40 meters from me in a full out run. The first shot from my Marlin Guide Gun .45-70 hit right behind him. The second shot hit him center mass. He stumbled and kept on going. The third shot hit him just above the left shoulder and he went down.

I walked down to the bottom of the canyon and instantly picked up the blood trail. About 40 yards from where I saw him go down, I spotted the hog standing up and still. Knowing he was wounded, I took the high ground about 40 feet above him. By this time I had slung my rifle and had my Sig P220 loaded with Buffalo Bore .45 acp +P FMJ. I was in a quartering position at his rear and placed a shot behind his left shoulder. That's when the real fun began.

He got pissed, turned and charged me. He jumped a shrub that was between me and him and I fired 4 shots. All 4 shots hit him but the last 2 were head shots and he went down 8 feet in front of me.

The boar was 320+/- lbs and had the biggest tusks I have ever seen on a California hog. That was the first time I have been charged and to be honest, it was a pretty cool feeling. I have major respect for these animals. It's pretty amazing what they can endure.

Oh and BTW, that rifle my boss is holding is a Remington MSR .338 Lapua!! There are only 2 in the civilian world. Amazing rifle

Ok, so you really had to mention the rifle too. Nice hog and rifle. Did you at least get to shoot the MSR?

Oh yeah. Today we popped it's cherry. We had a couple old porcelain sinks that we were shooting at 400 meters. Badass rifle

Nice choppers on that dude. Biggest ivory I've seen on a big CA boar was 4 1/2" Hogs are like bears sometimes, when wounded they want some paybacks.

You hit him twice with a 45-70 and he's still standing, so you pull out a .45 ACP to finish him off? Dude....

I'm a big fan of the .45, and +P FMJ is sure better than hollow point, but Dude...

Talk about no margin for error!

Which one had the bigger balls, you or the hog?

^^^Good story and pics. Next time leave the pistol with a sprinkling of powder in the case and finish him off with the rifle with enough powder to power the Canadian Army.

LOL. I know. Hindsight is 20/20. I should have used the rifle for the coup de grace, but the story wouldn't have been as good!

Yeah, definetly use the 45-70 and not the 45, but glad you had fun and were safe. Nice pig bro!

Nice Hog and a great story.

You learned a lesson. Use the rifle when they're still standing on all fours. Could have ended badly, but you would have some great scars to go along with the story.

here's how you should tell it,

I walked down to the bottom of the canyon and instantly picked up the blood trail. About 40 yards from where I saw him go down, I spotted the hog standing up and still. Knowing he was wounded, I took the high ground about 40 feet above him and pulled down on him with the 45-70, cocked the hammer, squeezed the trigger and "click". WTF! jacked another round in the chamber and "click". I guess that hog figured whatever was making that noise was responsible for his hurt because he turned towards me and charged! Not knowing what was wrong with the lever gun I dropped it and pulled my Sig P220 loaded with Buffalo Bore .45 acp +P FMJ and I fired 4 shots. All 4 shots hit him but the last 2 were head shots and he went down 8 feet in front of me.

Now that is good hunting story!

I remember the last time I went hunting hogs. I thought I was going to die and it had nothing to do with the hog charging me.

Nice shoot and story. I would carry a 500 smith for backup. They dont take 5 rounds and keep going after a hit.

I then looked over to my buddy and said in a calm John Wayne Voice "Well now, that pig is deader than hell. Now pass me that whiskey"
                              Fixed with PCH style ending.

You shot anything else with that .45-70? I've been thinking of getting one for deer/bear b/c I'm in love with big sectional density bullets going slow and doing massive damage for deer/bear.
