Im taking the Hunter safty class.....what now.

The class is on 12/18, I know I need to buy my license after the class.

Basically I want to know what hunting gear I should buy first.

Id like to start out small..Rabbits, yotes, squirrls etc.

I have a dedicated .22 AR, will that be ok for rabbits and squirrls? I also have a 10/22 but I cant put a scope on it because it has tech sights(for appleseed).

I also have a Savage .17hmr and a Remington 870 w/28" barrel. I dont think any of my other guns are ok for hunting(SKS, AK's, AR15, Glock, Beretta, Mosin etc.)

Eventually Ill buy a bolt gun, probably .308 for bigger stuff. Im new to this(hunting that is, Ive been shooting for a while now.) so any tips will be appreciated .

    Thank you.

I just started hunting 2 years ago, so I guess I can give you some input.

Probably start off by getting some nice/comfortable hunting boots. Your AR should be okay, but when I am hunting rabbits, usually they are running. So if your good, you can use your iron sights. I started off by using a shotgun for most of my hunting. Now I use a gsg5 for rabbit hunting b/c its more challenging. For yotes, I havent hunted any yet but a 17hmr should be able to do it. Your AR15 should be better.

If you have any questions, you can feel free to PM me anytime. We all have to start somewhere lol.

Sounds like you got enough hardware for just starting out. You'd be surprised what you can bring down with a Mosin.... Everything in this neck of the woods (North America).

Is the 870 a fixed choke or Rem-Choke? If not Rem-Choke what is the choke on the barrel? Rem-Choke just makes it more flexible for going after game.

Looks like ya just gotta concentrate on the gear (boots, camo, rain gear, bino's, calls, GPS, etc). Not to mention a copy of the regs. and maps of BLM.

Uhhh..... don't think 17HMR gonna quite be enough for yotes (unless all ya plan to do is head shots). Try 5.56 JHP's...

The Advanced Hunter Education Clinics are a great resource for new hunters. Unfortunately the 2010 schedule is over but the 2011 schedule should be out soon. Here is the link: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/advanced/

Specifically the Land Navigation and Survival classes are great fundamental skill sets for hunters.
