    We kill elk within 100 yards consistently with a 30-30. My uncles last one was shot with his 6" M19 Smith and wesson 357 mag. It doesn't take a lot of power at that range, The 7.62X54 is plenty powerful enough, I would not trust that rifle at 200 yards on a hunt that cost thousands of dollars.

      I haven't taken my 91/30 Mosin hunting before, but I wouldn't hesitate to
      do so. With 203gr Silver Bear SP it shoots 1.25" 100 yard groups. That
      7.62X54R round has plenty of knock down power for anything in the
      lower 48 and most everywhere else for that matter. I put a Simmons
      4X32mm scope on mine with a S&K scout mount. I'm sure if I reloaded
      for it I could shrink the groups considerably.
