Do you guys think a 308 is to big for coyote hunting? I'm not looking to keep the fur, and I know I won't be shooting a lot of them in one day so cost of ammo is no concern. Also, does any one know were I can get a chance to shoot my first one?

Coyotes caliber?

I haven't hunting coyotes yet (would love to for the fur!), but I hear from many that the 22-250 is just about perfect for coyote. I hear .204 Ruger is good too.
However, if you don't plan on keeping the fur, I also would be interested to know from others why it would matter if you used a .500 Nitro Express? Dead is Dead, I would think? -
If you're not keeping the fur, which is smart because warm weather coyotes have inferior fur, so unless you're hunting up in the Sierras in winter they're not worth much.
Use whichever gun you shoot accurately to as far as your comfortable. Since you don't say what part of CA you're in it's hard to recommend a place for you to try hunting them.Frank

I've used my .223 with 55gr soft points and it leaves a big exit hole. Not good for keeping the fur. I've also used my .22-250 with 55gr soft points. I couldn't find the entrance or exit wound. (I didn't skin it) No fur damage at all. Nice thing about the 22-250 is that it releases all it's energy INSIDE. The bullet fragments and the dog drops, end of story.____________________________________

The thing with firearms is that they are not like any other consumer product, simple ownership of one carries a lot of responsibility.

I've never personally hunted Coyote's(although I'd like to), but it seems that a .308 would be a bit large. I'd say a .22 centerfire is going to get the job done about as good as anything.Dom
