Any good fishing spots near Modesto?

My wife and I are giving fishing a try this year, but we live in Modesto and haven't found very many spots to go without driving for an hour. Any places around here? What baits do you use?
either start being proactive or leave the state. The longer you're here, and waiting for bills to pass, the less rights you will have.

You might try Woodward Reservoir if you go to Escalon then head toward Oakdale on 120 just before Oakdale there's a sign for Woodward.

Go to the south end (unimproved area) thiers some decent fish lurking about.
      Worms seem to work

On the way there's a good bait/tackle store as you head out of Escalon in a shopping center on 120 they could tell you whats working.

I've also heard of a Modeso Reservoir but I haven't been there and theres also the river off of River road going toward Escalon on McHenry theres a state ran park with river access
Hope this helps and Good luck

just in case anyone else starts looking for spots to fish in Modesto, here are some I've been referred to:

Lake McClure\McSwain - Excellent fishing, but a lot of people go there
Merced Falls - Below Lake McSwain, Excellent place to fish
Fox Grove - Not much to fish (bass and carp) but a nice layout and good with a boat
Tuolomne River - Again, not much to fish, but good with a boat
          Modesto Reservoir
          Woodward Reservoir
          Don Pedro Lake

Asking about spots for hunting or BLM land to shoot on is one thing, but asking about good fishing spots is a whole new ballpark.

I agree, asking about GOOD spots is a whole new ballpark. Being in a new town and asking if there are any spots within an hours drive is a bit different. I appreciate all who replied to my question.
