You can buy them over the counter at DFG locations or you can send in your tag request at the same time as everybody else around June/early July.

You must have a tag. You didn't think Kommiefornia wouldn't find a way to pry more $ out of your wallet did you

No...I know I need a tag. But I didnt know if the A zone required a request or not. Seems to me so much of the a zone is privately held that there couldnt be enough tags.

Is there any hunting in the Santa Cruz mountains?

I've got the tag application and was going to request the A zone but wasn't sure if it was even worth it because it's so close to urban areas...and anti's.

btw, my first hunt. Still sorting out locations, gear, etc.

If you wait for the Big Game Regs to come out it has a nice full color map showing all zones. You'll have plenty of time then to apply for tag or drop by the nearest DFG office for any over the counter tags. It's easy usually no line unless you show up on a Friday afternoon.

The A zone is not a limited draw so you don't have to put in a request and play the lottery and hope you get drawn. As duckman said when the regs come out the booklet answers 98% of all questions and it's a lot better than it used to be.

I would say hunting in the SC mountains is generally hard to do....due to most land being privately held. I am however married to a woman who's family is owner of some land in an "OK to shoot area"....so...Im good to go.

So...deer tags cant be purchased at big 5 like my pig tags..??? They have to be purchased at the DFG office..???

Nice thing about dfg office is that things get handled alot quicker...sometimes even over the counter. Bad thing is sometimes the lines get pretty long and you have to wait till your number is called in that small lobby

You should be able to get it done online/mail order too. I printed out and completed the forms from the website, had someone witness my signature at work and faxed it back in.

IIRC, I had my C tags and 2009/2010 license last summer within 5 days of faxing in my paperwork.

It's not the intstant gratification we all like of getting it over the counter, but it sure beats driving to a field office and waiting in a line.

Some say that he rode a dirtbike 7k miles across the country and that he once applied Bengay to his own testicles for a mere $50............They call him, the Hutch -Top Gear

You probably won't get drawn although they do hold back a few tags for first timers. If you do get drawn spend some time scouting up there before your hunt and good luck.
