Got rolled by Johnny Law while huntin' coyotes

It has been a long time since I've had the cops roll up on me while hunting but they did last Saturday night. I have to say that it went as absolutely well as it could. I have had encounters with most of the usual law enforcement agencies you would expect, sheriff, local city cops, border patrol, DFG, and now I can add the CHP to the list.

It was about 7:30-8:00 in the evening when we got off the highway, went about 1/2 a mile up the road, turned off on a dirt road and by now we noticed that we have picked up a tail. We went up the dirt road less than 1/2 a mile, stopped, and went dark just as they did the same. We spent about 2 minutes discussing what was going on when they turned their lights back on and started coming our way. At this point we both stepped out of the vehicle and walked to the back bumper with our empty hands in plain sight as they rolled up with the spot lights blazing.

Two younger cops, one was probably mid to late 20's and the other in his early 30's at best, exit the vehicle and the senior officer asks what we are up to. I told him we were out for an evening of predator hunting and he comments with, "oh OK, no problem then". What ensued was more like your typical b.s. session amongst fellow gun nuts than it was a fishing expedition from an overzealous cop. Sure, he asked where we were from, which way had we come in from, what caliber were we shooting, did I mind if he took a look at my AR, mind if his partner could check it out too. He mentioned that their interest was in that they were gun nuts too and that they had just both purchased AR's , the younger guy had an S&W and the senior officer a CMMG. Funny this was my first time ever in the field with an AR, I've always run a much more conventional bolt gun. My AR is a DPMS Sweet 16 upper mated with a Calguns lower with a Hammerhead stock adapter and the short fixed tactical stock. Neither one had seen such a beast and were both interested in how it felt and looked. They never even really considered checking ID's, running serial numbers, or any along those lines.

Myself, I subscribe to the theory that the less time I spend interacting with law enforcement the better. While I am a basic law abiding citizen, I have much more to loose than I do to gain. That being said I am not a real proponent of the whole "am I being detained, am I free to go now, is that a legal question officer, I am not required to answer that" kind of crap. These guys were polite and professional and while they did conduct a bit of a fishing expedition, they were neither pricks nor over bearing about it. Their reason for rolling on us was because 1) we drove off into the desert and they see all kinds of illegal stuff go on out there and 2) when they went to follow us we went dark, just as they did too. I told them we went dark because we saw that they were following us and we did not know who they were.

All in all it went about as well as could be hoped for. I have been rolled by some real dicks before and these two guys were surely a credit to their profession.

I feel that most of law enforcement are pretty good folks. I have met some bad ones but that does not allow me to paint the rest. They have a hard job. The easier we make it, the easier we make their jobs as well.

I hope im not jinxing myself right now lol. If i get pulled over, tasered and the crap kicked out of me on the way to work ill post about it haha

The Game Wardens that I have come up against in the past have always been the best of the bunch. I think that stems from two things, they are typcially hunters to start with (at least they used to be) and because of the nature of their job, they know the laws that pertain to what I am doing, unlike many of your other LEO's. There is something about tromping around in the middle of the night, swinging a light, murdering furry little creatures that just seems illegal on the face of it, they just know that there has to be something illegal going on.

Good to hear. Not too many mention the positive encounters they have had in the field with law enforcement. I wish I could share a similar experience. My experiences have been negative.

I wish my story could have ended as well as yours. My first experience was probabally the worst of a few that ive had. It ended with weapon confiscations, a torn appart truck, citations, a horrible experience and impression for a 14 year old boy that was with me.

This was over 10 years ago with by bosses son. We went out to shoot what we hoped would be a few rabbits in the national forest. We arrived to the gate to the forest where we met a person in a truck from the department of forestry. He told us that the forest was closed because there was a fire. We spoke casually for about ten minutes about the fire.

At the end of the conversation the forest rep said that the fire crew was on their way out. The fire had unofficially been declared out and that the burn area was roughly 20 miles away. He said that the crew was leaving and that the only issue we may have if we wanted to go into the forest was that we may have to park on the side of the road for a while if the crews were heading down the mountain.

We spoke for a few minutes more, thanked him and headed up the mountain. We arrived at the top and decided to walk in a direction that looked as if the cdf hadent been in the area. We geared up for our hike and started to walk. As we started to go the forest rep drove by and we waved to him as we walked away. We hunted without shooting anything or seeing any evidence of any kind of fire crews in the area for the next 2 hours.

We made a large loop and was a few hundred yards away from the truck when my younger hunting patrner and I heard a voice from loud speaker coming from the direction from where we parked. We unloaded our shotguns and walked the trail back to the truck discussing what we thought the loudspeaker had said. As we got closer we heard the loudspeaker again saying that it was the sheriffs department. We were instructed to unload our weapons and continue to walk to the end of the trail.

My young hunting partner knew many of the sheriff deputies because he was a member of the junior deputies explorer group and his father was a volunteer of the sheriffs search and rescue team. Nither of us were nervous or concerned.

We approached our truck and was able to see a sheriffs car behind it. A voice from behind our truck told us to lay our shotguns on the ground. We both complied. Two deputies revealed themselves from behind my truck with rifles drawn. We were instructed to keep our hands up. Another deputy came from behind us and conducted a pat down search of myself asking if I had anyother weapons. I had a pocket knife and he removed it from my pocket. I was told to law down on the ground after. The deputy went behind my partner and asked the same thing. He said that he had a knife and a 22 pistol in a holster. The deputy proceded to use a take down method where my partner basically was pushed into the ground face first while his hands were behind his back. He was startled by the sudden action and had the wind knocked out of him. He started to cry loudly. This must have made the deputies nervous. Another deputy came over and steped on the back of his neck pressing the barrel of his service rifle against the back of his head yelling that he would shoot him if he moved. This only made matters worse as my young partner was petrified and balling. The deputy removed the pistol and knife from him.

The deputies put us both in hand cuffs and did a complete search of our belongings. They rolled this kid over so he could now sit up and his complection was pale. His face was packed with dirt and his eyes were pouring tears while snot and dirt was coming out of his nose. He seemed drunk and disorientated. He looked at the deputies he had come to know as they were now giving eachother hi 5's.

The deputies took my keys and removed everthing from my truck and the toolbox. The deputy in charge told that me that the national forest was closed and that by being there we were commiting federal tresspassing. My partner cried silently by himself when the deputy discovered the card in his wallet that said he was a member of the junior sheriffs explorer department announcing "not any more" when he pulled it out.

After it was all over we dicsovered that the forest rep who let us in the forest decided that it wasnt a good idea. He came to the top of the mountain to let us know he changed his mind but was intimidated by the shotguns we were carring so he thought it would be easier just to call the deputies to do it for him.

I wish I could say that that boy recovered from this experience. He didnt. He quit the junior sheriffs explorer team. His father quit the search and rescue team as did many others over this incident. The kid was really never the same. My views changed as well.

Wow. That's a terrible story bigboarstopper. Though it doesn't surprise me. I've never been through what you have, but had unpleasant encounters nonetheless. Unfortunately in my personal experience, I seem to run into the jerks (always unprovoked) about 70% of the time, and the nice guys the other 30.

We never found any coyotes but on about the second or third stand of the evening we had a real nice gray fox come in and cooperate. He was at about 60-65 yards out and was picture perfect. I have done all of my predator hunting with a .243, so long as I do my part the animals I shoot are all pretty much DRT. That fox was right there but he was not quite dead yet and it took another couple of minutes for him to expire. I am shooting Barnes 50gr. Varmint Grenades. I'll give them that much, unlike the 62 grain 6mm varmint grenades, those little 50 grainers don't make a mess, just a little .22 hole and that is it. The previous gray fox, shot with the .243 VG, had a little 6mm hole in his chest and the entire contents of his chest cavity were blown out the gaping hole in his backside, yep DRT.

Bigboarstopper, I have had some go bad in the past but none as horribly wrong as yours, truly sorry to hear that one.

I have been through what we refer to as the "yardsale" a few times, where they empty out the entire contents of your hunting rig onto the highway in the middle of the night, not what I would consider a good time. Typically it is the sheriff's department that employs these tactics, not to say that they do it everytime but everytime it has been done it is them. I've had the border patrol yell and scream in my face once and have had them act polite and professionally on 3-4 other occassions.
I find that the times that I have been rolled when I have kids with me it has always gone exceptionally well, you would think it would though.

So what was the final outcome on your ordeal? Sounds like at the very least it was plenty of time and money spent trying to get your gear back and defending yourself. Not pretty anyway you look at it.

                        308. Our charges werent filed by the DA. So I guess you could say they were dropped. We finally recieved our weapons back after about 8 month and about 2 dozen phone calls. The guns were covered in rust and just about worthless when we got them back. They stored the guns in the sleeves that we had used to transfer in when we went hunting. 8 months in a gun sleeve without a single wipedown basically ruined all 3 weapons. Funny thing that I forgot was the warden that the S.O. deputies called in to see if he could add any charges. When he showed up he said the deputies could take off if they wanted. After the deputies left he asked what happened. We told him and he said he would be fired in a hearbeat if he approached hunters in that way.

Weve been jammed up a few times by LEOs. Everytime, weve been treated right and left alone. Just the typical "check up" tis all. Still sux as it still ruins that spot with all the commotion.

Yeah, funny how it works that way. I remember one time out Palm Springs way we got rolled by the DFG, it was within about an hour or so of dawn and they knew we'd be wraping it up once the sun came up. Suckers decided that they would just go ahead and hang out and shoot the breeze with us until the sun came up. It was kind of funny though, even then, there were 2 of them and they had a kid doing a ride along, I made mention of the keeping us there 'til dawn routine and the senior warden's comment was, "Hey, you play your game, and we play ours", might I add, with a big smile on his face.

On that particular trip I screwed up pretty hard, I was out hunting without a license, forgot the darn thing on my dresser at home. What does the warden say, "well I guess there really is no law against sitting on the side of the roade, cammied to the bone, in the hatch, and swinging a light, without a hunting license, Right?" I told him, hey if you say so, and his response was to not worry about it and just send him a copy of my license on Monday because nobody could be so stupid as to actually not have one. Game Warden Eric Veilhauer, still remember that guy and it has been 15+ years if it has been a day.

i've had wardens check me during quail and dove season. Checked my birds and guns and left. Seemed relatively nice. Also had one sneak up behind me while hunting ground hogs. Scared me cause I was in the tree lines and he came out of the woods.
